Default Recommended Tools for Working on Your 928?

Aloha!

Alright... First, I think I should disclose that I am not a mechanic. Mechanically inclined? Sure. But until purchasing my first 928 within the past 4-6 months- the last time I did any serious work on a car was over 24 years ago. Things have changed since then. For one, although some of us may have been using BBSs and the like, we now have- and are using fairly frequently- the Internet. And with that, forums like this one.

However, in working on my new-to-me 928, I am finding that, especially when I set out on a specific task, I am missing a particular tool- or having a certain tool would definitely make a certain job easier. I've searched our 928 Forum- including the New Visitor section- and don't see a "Recommended Tools" thread, so I'm starting one... and hopefully this makes it to the New Visitor archive...

Please respond with a specific tool or tools that you would recommend to any 928 Owner. Please included model number/part number when applicable.

To start things off:

-Dremel Rotary Tool (I use Dremel 8220-2/28 12-Volt Max Cordless)
-Dremel 532 1/8 in. End Shape Stainless Steel Brush
-Dremel 537 1/8 in. End Shape Brass Brush
-Dremel 511E EZ Lock Coarse Grit and Medium Grit Finishing Abrasive Buffs
-Dremel 512E EZ Lock Fine Grit Finishing Abrasive Buffs

-27mm Socket

Metric allen wrenches and sockets.

multimeter

a couple various sized screwdrivers.

A good jack and stands. That should cover most of it. A lot most people have already.

Good luck on your project

Plasters,
bandages,
gloves,
sledgehammer,
chequebook,
small hands,
anti-seize,
penetrating oil,
fine sandpaper for grounds,
lots of rags,
eye protection,
Loctite blue
torque wrench,
breaker bar for crank nut & rear axle buts.
Double spade ended electrical wire for jumping terminals on CE panel,
Large containers to drain fluids into (fluid capacity on a 928 is larger than many cars)
Power bleeder for brake fluid replacement.
Suitable filler for auto transmission
Suitable spanner for fuel sender plastic nut.

That is all that springs to mind immediately.

LOL, I like threads like this.. so far I have everything mentioned.

Lets assume you already have a good set of wrenches (up to and including 27/30/32mm), and the whole range of sockets/drivers in 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2".

Would also add:

Old digital camera with a good macro mode (this will get greasy)
Zip-lock bags and a sharpie to write on them
Good set of Internal and External Circlip pliers
Flywheel lock
A set of wobble-bar extensions in various lengths and diameters (6" long 1/4" and 3/8" ones are invaluable)

Well you could get special tool 9190 (queue Rob E with a pic)

Otherwise, there's a really good oil-filter wrench which takes a 3/8" drive and adjusts to fit the tank sender nut perfectly. I bought one after seeing a pic on a post here: (https://rennlist.com/forums/9777273-post8.html)

A can of Deoxit
self adhesive silicone tape for repairing cracked wiring if no access to heat shrink tubing
synthetic grease for vac lines
non-ferrous hammer (i like a brass hammer)
If you are going to rebuild an engine bite the bullet, get a good quality digital torque wrench (Snap-on, Mac, etc.) that can also measure angle torque. You need to go as low as 7 ftlbs to up to 250 ftlbs.(usually two different wrenches)
a good light,
LED flexible micro light that can get into little crevices
head lamp
parts cleaner brushes - nylon and non-ferrous
mini torch
a notebook to take down info, make notes, etc.
WSM
laptop with internet access to RL and many other great sites.
a good set of jack stands,
22" lift jack 3,000lb capacity
Porken bars or a lift - MAXJAX, 2 post, 4 post lift
A GOOD tool box/chest to house all of these items clearly labeled where you don't have to open every drawer to find what you are looking for.
air compressor
creeper for getting under the vehicle
patience
perserverance
first aid kit
acetyminophen for the headaches you will get
ibuprophen for the sore muscles you will have
Good tunes.
dry, level location to work on your vehicle
