Unhappy 1982 928

Fellow Rennlisters-

I have a 1982 928 Black/Black 5 Speed.

Throughout the entire time that I have owned it,
I always believed that it had the Competition Package.

However, based upon my reading I now believe that it is a Euro spec car.

The VIN on the windshield is WPOJAO922CS820496.

The number on the hood seam is WPOZZZ92ZCS820496.

The ZZZ code led me to believe that it is a Euro.

The engine code is M28/15 81C0244.

I am unable to find out anything about this car.

I would greatly appreciate any and all information that can be provided.

Thank you.

Carson

That engine code is for a US 5-speed.

Sorry. The euro code is M28/09 (non "S") or M28/11 ("S" model).

Sounds like your car had some damage and had euro parts added.

Dave-

Thank you for the reply.

Since the engine is a US spec, why does it have a ZZZ code on the hood seam?

Also, how many horsepower and ft. pounds of torque does this engine have?

Thank you.

I thought the same, as my '81 has the same 'ZZZ'/'WPO' mismatch, but it turns out the fenders numbers are more generic.

The number under the windshield and/or the engine type number is what counts.

From 928Specialist engine chart:

M28/15
81-82 - 5-man (US)
4.5L-16v
HP: 220
TQ: 265

Same here the ZZZ is on the hood seam but the real number is on the windshield. If you really want to know what your car came with/is contact Porsche of North America for a "Certificate of Authenticity". It will tell all the things that the car came with from the factory.

The base chassis always gets built with ZZZ, as they dont know the final build spec at that time. If both the chassis and the screen has ZZZ then its a ROW car.
I know a guy with a VIN that was screwed at the factory (on the fender) - put in a wrong digit, tried to overstamp it, looked bad, covered it with *, and did the whole number again just below. I bet he would get some funny looks at some inspection places if it was in US.
