I broke the shroud trying to get it our of there
Me too. Just a small piece of the edge. Saved the piece...will repair it. This thread is timely, as I'll be going back in to put on a Gates belt this summer. Now I know how to not pop that piece out by forcing it again.

^--- this is exactly what I do too.

Outline is:
  1. Undo the fan harness clamps and pull the wires out over the front right fender
  2. Snip the cable tie on the lower rad hose
  3. Undo the airpump feed hose from the base of the filter housing on the rad shroud.
  4. Remove top two 10mm hex-screws holding shroud to radiator.
  5. Loosen the strap around the PS reservoir (6 or 7mm socket depending on strap) to gain some wiggle room.
  6. Lift the fan shroud slightly and lean it away from you to get two wrenches on the upper oil cooler fitting (32mm wrench and 27mm to counter hold).
  7. Undo top oil cooler fitting and tuck the loose end outboard of the radiator
  8. Pull the shroud towards you again, and lift it upwards, and to the right, while pulling the top rad hose away from the shroud a bit to make space.
The whole thing comes out without draining the coolant, all easy peasy.

Or course, if you have an auto cooler in the radiator, then haa haa! that might make it a bit tricker. I've never pulled the shroud on an auto.
