Aftermarket injection/ignition system?

Just a comment...as an electronic engineer I'm a big fan of original parts, and try to use them whenever available. The point on the MAF question is much more to have a spare replacement just to "test", and I intend to run the original parts. In the other hand, as this car is very much all based in analog electronics (LH and EZK), if much less sensitivity to the calibration of all sensors than cars based on pure digital electronic. There is much more approximation while doing calculations on analog systems...

Taking the opportunity to make a question. Someone here mentioned our cars uses the MAF as the E39 BMW M5. Reading the M5 board, I saw that several members migrated to the use of a VW MAF, code 06A906461A. In the poll they did about it, this new MAF seems to have worked for 85% of the users. So, as the teacher use to say in school, if A=B, and B=C, then A=C. Or, simply, does anyone ever tried VW MAF's in our 928's? I'm willing to give a try...
Anyway the point is while the knowledge of the outcome would be of potentially great benefit for you (assume there are loads of VW's there) - you aren't the ideal test case for this - right? We'd need someone with a Sharktuner/plotter (and ideally a dyno) who could evaluate it thoroughly.
Just deviating from stock creates lots of risk for the rest of what you do though (you'd always wonder...?)... If you need the car to run routinely and worry a lot about this - just find another MAF/ECUs as backup. Rebuilt LH is pretty reliable (actually they are fairly reliable anyway ~>20years) while EZK's seem to be virtually bulletproof.
Amortizing the costs of the stock system (even refreshed) over a reasonable lifetime make it look like the most attractive option I think. There may be upfront costs to refresh, but there aren't likely to be high ongoing costs after that for a long time, and the expected behaviour is well known.
Again the other option to me is an alternative system you can source relatively easily and inexpensively localy where there is also knowledgeable support. Having said that adapting it to a 928 is likely to be their first one ever - so it isn't so straightforward to configure... but once done - you'd have somewhere to take it for service.

On the analog sensors - there are few digital sensors - just digitizing analog sensors - so the bigger differences are in cost & potentially reduced noise in the data transmission to the ECU (and prob. the main reason for a manufacturer: fewer wires).
The sensors really don't seem to be an issue at all in a 928 and the engine control system works as advertized. Unless you plan to modify the ECU configuration to match other engine changes (SC/Turbo, sequential etc) for e.g. performance reasons - I don't see any other functional need for an improvement for a stock car.

Alan, I believe you quite a good point here, and I mixed 2 discussions here. My intention of moving for a aftermarket system is to be 100% sure that everything is ok. On the VW MAF, I'll always wonder is this is ok or not, so yes, I will buy a second unit and keep as spare if i keep the original system in the car. I'm probably suffering from new owner syndrome..scared about everything that could go wrong...
Anyway, going into a week of services in the car. Checked flex plate pressure, trans pressure, cleaned the injectors, replaced ign plugs and wires, re-adjusted suspension height , replace leaking PS hose, ...and as I spent a lot of time looking to the engine bay started to have several ideas on how to improve it.
