Default Porsche to replace GT3 engines due to fire risk

Very interesting that Porsche would do this: http://money.cnn.com/2014/03/18/auto...html?hpt=hp_t3

Porsche will replace the engines in 785 high-performance sports cars because of a risk that the current engines could catch fire. The move was made in response to two engine fires in Porsche 911 GT3s.
785 GT3 engines, that's a lot of coin!

And only two engine fires!

How many 928's need to fry before we get some help?!

Just kidding on that last comment. -Ed

Problem must be much worse than what 1R vs 2R GTS rod was since it took over 2 years for Porsche to react and redesign GTS & 968 rods. It would be interesting to know what exactly is changed besided rods or their bolts. Breather setup to prevent fires even if there is big oil leak on pressure system?

Fuel line caused fires are different thing.

Can't remind 928 owners too often the importance of replacing those old fuel lines (as much as I hate seeing those flaming 928 pics).

Does replace mean a new or just a fixed motor?

The oil leak was from the connecting rods cutting the engine case in to two pieces.......as the motors let go !!!

Autocross an early Cayman and the Power Steering overheats melts the plastic reservoir and dumps fluid all over the engine and exhaust....which then can ignite and easily do $20,000 or so of damage if you get the fire put out soon enough...

i find it odd that they claim the reason for replacement is the possibility of fire and not a connecting rod failure

^^ A bit like the minimisation tactic used to explain failures in racing .... e.g; an electrical failure (alternator knocked off by rod exiting block) .. sounds better!

Porsche has a Toyota public relations specialist working on it.

LMAO! SO TRUE!!! Porsche are supposed to be the masters of engineering prowess so to admit they screwed up in the design and build of an entire batch of high performance engines would just not work in any way!

I was at the local dealership with the PCA folks........the GT3 was mentioned in embarrassed hushed undertones.

That can't be... the Toyota guy wouldn't have even showed up yet - way too early...
