Update:

Waiting on bar and socket (from neighbor). Hoping replacement vac hoses, plug wires, intake gaskets, intake sleeves, AFC o-ring & related mounts and a free weekend all arrive at about the same time...

Don't recall thinking it needed to be out.

Ehllis- you are quite correct! But I think I (accidentally ) lifted the distributor up & out just enough... in a bad way.

See #6 & Dave's, I think, spot-on assessment in #7.

to refit the distributor,
set the engine to TDC,
NOTE make sure the cams are lined up to the hash marks,
and 0IT is indicated.

Fit the distributor so the rotor tip points to the hash mark on the distributor body,
the housing timing marks should also be very close to the original marks when its seated.

NOTE with the distributor out of the engine the rotor tip will be off a few degrees ,
and will spin into the correct position when the body seats

Just getting back on this earlier this week...

As of this writing, having 27mm socket and 16" flex head drive turned crank real easily to get to TDC. My WSMs came yesterday (yes, section 24-122 is in there!) so I'll go back in later today and recheck cams and distributor (while battery charges) as my test start had the same result as before... More of click and ratchet sound than whir, but knowing I've got good juice can only help.

I did torque my plugs though and have replaced all but plug wires 4 & 8 until I start intake refresh & more... Just want to hear that sweet sound from Eleonore instead of the 928 motorsports page before going any deeper...

Thanks again for all your help!

This thread just made me realize I have messed something up with re-installing my distributor.... If I get home and fix this and it starts I am going to be soooooooo happy.... Like I cannot contain my excitement to get home and try it.

Alrighty... I now know not only what I did wrong in removing my distributor (TDC) but also in trying to correct it (advance). WSMs, proper tools and experienced and knowledgable local mechanics also helped quite a bit ;-)

In addition, the underlying wacky idle, running, backfire issues also required a new temp sensor (& plug wires 4 & 8 have since been installed; new ignition coil, alternator & AGM battery too).

I'd say she's purring like a kitten but Ele sounds more like a happy growling tiger!

Thanks again y'all!!!
