Default Dash Lights

Is anybody else out there having a problem with the idiot light replacement bulb-units (99963130190)?? That is the 1/4-turn black-plastic units that twist into place on the printed circuit sheet.

I got these by ordering this part number off the PET. They are, indeed, 1/4-turn units, with what appears to be the right bulb, but they dont make contact the same way as the originals. Also, the now-plastic bayonet is too big for the cut-out in the plastic, and I think the plastic casting's central bore is also too large for the holes in the plastic pod unit.........

Any similar experiences? Did I just get the wrong part with the right part #? It seems I only need 12!!

Brian;
I make the correct Porsche PN as 999.631.301.90 (got this from the 928 Intl catalog). I got replacements for these from a local shop the specializes in Volvo and BMW repairs. They had a selection of similar bulbs...I was looking for an instrument cluster lighting bulb as well and they had both.

I don't have the bulb in front of me now, but I recall is was an Osram 1.2watt bulb...I think it was their PN: 2721MF...very common as warning lights in european cars. You can see a picture and dimensions at: http://www.aeparts.co.nz/aeparts/cattest/eurobh5.htm (it's the one listed as "black" base)

I'd suggest you take a sample and drop down to the nearest foriegn car parts place or the local BMW/Volvo dealer and you should be able to match it up.

I recall there were two very similar bulbs when I got mine. The incorrect one had a slightly longer globe and slightly different bayonette base. The correct one had a very small looking globe for the overall size of the bulb.

Brian's issue seems to be with the black plastic bulb holder.

His "original" bulb holders have a circular nipple that inserts into the back of the instrument cluster. The PN # 999.631.301.90 seem to have an elliptical shaped nipple thus we were trying to fit an elliptical shaped plug in a circular hole....no go....

Were the black plastic bulb holders updated throughout the years??

OK...now I am confused. My car (1985) has composite bulb/holders for the warning lights. Bulb and black socket come as one piece. I tried to seperate the two pieces and broke the bulb globes. The Osram PN is the integrated holder and bulb. Maybe the change was part of the '86.5 MY updates?

Steve: The part looks as you describe it......... black base with bulb. The only thing is, the base on these new ones is subtly different in shape, and won't plug in.

Ah...I understand now. Maybe then, back to my original suggestion: try to match it up with a vendor that has a selection of similar units.

Is there a manufacturer's part number on the base or does it have a Porsche PN? Be interested to know the non-Porsche PN if it exists.

SteveCo
