It seems possible that turning the crank backwards could compress the tensioner allowing the crankshaft to turn before the slack was removed (and the t-belt tight enough) to rotate the cams. And, it seems possible that doing this could cause valves and pistons to meet (albeit slowly). Just a thought...

There is nothing in the tensioner to compress other than the cup shaped bimetalic washers . The tensioner is a mechanical device tension is set by turning the bolt on the bottom . Once set all that it can do is relax slightly when heated (cup shaped washers flatten ) . Oil is used to tranfer heat and on later years to act as a shock absorber (damper) to help control flutter of the belt to avoid tension light warnings. If the belt is going to jump when turning it by hand backwards one would think it would be far more likely to skip turning forward at 6,000 RPM .

Thanks for the advice Jim, I did pull off the TB covers and see nothing unusual, also the belt has less than 1000 miles on it so it wouldn't have any slack to trip itself. Related ??
The TT job is done; found the voltage leak and replaced the fuel pump relay so time to crank it over. Wanted to make sure that I have the gearshift selector set up properly but will start it with rear wheels off the ground -? when the gear shift is in neutral and I manually turn one of the rear wheels the opposite one turns in unison this is normal correct?

Joe, this weekend is OK by me, just let me know the day, the time and directions to your place. I assume that the "ship from" location is your NJ address?

if the rear wheels turn the same direction when you turn one by hand then the car has a limited slip differential , that is a good thing . If the rear wheels turn oppsite directions then it is no limited slip ..less good .

Don: This weekend is good. I am leaving Thursday night. Should be there Friday morning. I want to take the 928, but if the weather is bad I will take the truck. Spent all last weekend cleaning it and do not want to drive 700 miles through a storm. Yes the return address is correct.
