Default HVAC Bulb

I've tried searching, and assumed this would be easily found, but no luck.

I've gotten my pod lights back functioning by removing and cleaning the rheostat. However, no light on the HVAC control panel. I understand that there's one bulb with fiber optic illumination of the controls.

Any suggestions on how to access the bulb? Remove the panel (how do you do that?), or can you access by removing the carpeted panels on the side of the console?

You'll need to pull the HVAC system out. The bulb socket itself is within the HVAC board and it's a bit hard to get to, so removing the carpeted inserts on the sides of the console won't help.

EDIT: Scroll down thru the pictures of this thread for replacing the common malfunctioning A/C relay. It details how to also remove and install the HVAC unit.

Here's Dwayne's page on HVAC relay procedure. Go down the page and you will fine head unit removal and dis-assembly. You will see the bulb eventually. It should get you started.

to get to the bulb you need to remove the HVAC unit from the console, as has been previously suggested.

First remove the center air grills by pulling them to the rear of the car,

Then gently slide the top edges of the H piece out./
NOTE press on the console edge to spread it, then it lifts up slightly.

Then remove the 6 screws that hold the I light panel ,and the HVAC pod.
NOTE use a magnet to catch the 6 screws and washers.

Slide both parts out then disconnect the harnesses to the HVAC unit

Then carefully split the HVAC covers.

Then follow the fiber wires to the bulb socket,
gently pull the bulb holder out,
then pull out the old bulb,
Roger sells new bulbs.

NOTE the fiber wires are supposed to be in each slider **** and also a feed to the front panel,
NOTE if you try to pry out the sliders you will break them, as well as damage the fiber wires.
This may result in having to trim the broken wire thus it may need to be rerouted to have enough play.

NOTE clean the slider tracks and connector pins with an eraser and inspect the unit for burned traces.
dab some dielectric grease on the tracks.
NOTE It is also a good time to consider swapping in the Radio Shack relay for the AC controller

Dwayne has a writeup on this with pictures
