Yes hiding the glass mounted V1 was also a factor, and one reason for going to a complete blackout in the same area (I actually added that on the outside for easier installation...
BTW in a black interior (roof liner) car I highly recommend the black units -= started out with grey used VW parts and ended up selling these and buying new black ones from Roger. I had connectors to make up tails but roger sell the VW pigtails (easier).
The rear hatch end version seems to require modification to fit, (eliminate the connector...) assume thats true for all years. The bulbs these units take are different shorter than the stock 928 festoons. I already had a full set of LED's so I modified the lampholders to take the longer stock size lamps (quite easy to do). You can get LEDs in either size.
Obviously the switch is still the lens but it switches in the longest direction not axially with the bulb as with stock. This makes the effort to switch it lower and means you can orient directional LED bulbs for maximum illumination where you need it and not have it move significantly when you change between allways on and door switched mode.
One other great thing about these lamps is that though they fit the existing holes they overlap on the front face a few MM - if your trim is pulling back from the hole edge (seems to happen commonly with age) then these will likely cover that up - where the stock lampholders will not.

Much better design than stock. Replaced mine with light assemblies and pigtail wires from Roger. Easy swap and they look good. FWIW, the door lights are different and a more robust design, so I did not replace them.

If you are willing to go for some parts hunt at the local junkyard, they are full of VWs that have these lights. The Golfs and Jettas (99.5-2005.5) have these lights (my DD has it) and probably the bettles too. They are not in demand as they last a long time so finding them should be easy. I can't see them charging more than $10each at the junkyard. Ask then to clip the wire so the connector stays with the light.

+928 on going to the u-pull-it for these. Roger will deliver a plug and play solution in the color of your choice at a fair price. However, if you have the time or are going to a u-pull-it anyway, you can get plenty of these. I have a bucket of grey ones that cost me about $2 each. For me, the black ones seemed to hard to find. All I saw was grey and tan.
If anyone going to Hershey wants a few in grey, let me know. A rattle can can make them satin black but you will lose the pictograms.

All,
I have taken these lamps apart and yes they are not the best design, but can be cleaned and repaired if broken.
Attached are some images of a good door lamp assy., and a repaired assy. I used JB Weld epoxy and a small terminal. It is as strong as original and fits tightly in the door again.

I think the door ones are actually pretty good, they already don't match the roof ones, the roof ones break when you look at them. Usually the door ones only break when someone doesn't know how to get them out - and levers on the wrong end... The door ones dont have any more shielding on the back - but they are installed in the hardboard door panel with nothing much behind - so there isn't so much to go wrong... and they don't see as much heat - so stay good for a very long time

FWIW, I bought a couple of "VW interior lights" on EBay that look just like Alan's but are a bit smaller and don't fit my car's openings ... don't remember now what model or year they were supposed to be from but just a word to the wise they aren't all the same.

VW has door lights too - they are smaller & unswitched.
I think if you were redoing the doors (e.g. with fiberglass and new coverings) - making smaller cutouts and using these lights would be good - they match very nicely. Having switches on those lights is truly overkill IMO.
I had some of these and someone took them for such a project (not sure, but it might have been Rob Edwards).
