John specialises in classic car insurance and is happy to insure for an agreed value --- I had real trouble with my usual insurance co. who didn,t want to know about insuring my 1988 S4 and found John a breeze to deal with in comparison.
It,s great to find a fellow classic car owner who actually knows what car he,s dealing with rather than a clerk who is looking at a list, talking with a supervisor and neither of them really want to know.
Great service,a friendly and knowledgable guy --- highly recommended.

I have an '90 S4 ex Jap import - no issues with it.
Most insurance companies in NZ will do agreed value on a car. Sometimes require a nudge to get it realistic thou.
NZ has a forum dedicated to 928's that would put you in touch with other owners for advice & parts etc. Not very active but well worth being part of.

My Ex Hong Kong car has needed a lot to get it up to spec, (80,000Km when I got it) in the first three months needed radiator, header tank (much more expensive then LHD version and now NLA), engine mounts, heater hoses, torque tube etc. Since then I have done an intake refresh, knock sensors timing belt, transmission mounts and a heap of other stuff. The thing with HK cars is that the miles are hard miles, low speed, high external and under hood./bonnet temperature and lots of pollution which is tough on plastics and rubber.
Having said that its been reliable only real failures have been a burst heater hose (the little one off the back of the head which I had not not around to replacing) and the the high pressure PS line- a bit lucky to avoid a fire with that.
The unfunny thing is that I had a very clean PPI from the dealer in Auckland who only picked up the intermittent sunroof switch!
I insure via classic cars in Hamilton, about NZ $450 per year and they cover parts and tools in the garage.

On the whole the car is sound. Main issues are that the engine mounts are worn; the auto trans kickdown is unresponsive; the flex plate was under 4mm of tension when released, although there was no metal in the oil filter; the chassis rail has been repaired in a spot after being crushed on a lift; and the tyres are a little old.
I was quite happy and have gone ahead with the purchase. She's off for a service next week, I'll post pics soon.

If thats all that came back from motorscience's inspection, sounds good.
The crushed frame rail isn't structural (assuming you mean the rectangular-profiled ridges underneath). They're thin sheet metal, and have been squashed on most 928's from incorrect lifting by workshops/owners.
While its getting serviced, you might want to consider getting them to do a carbon-cleaning treatment too, depending how the piston-tops look with a borescope.

Yes, those metal ridges are the ones I'm referring to. Great idea about carbon cleaning. Oh, and I forgot to mention the left rear wheel well lining is missing, although I'm on to Jerry about a set of his replacements.

There is a small cover missing form the rear bumper which goes over the tow eye inlet. Roger has been supplying the rear LHS wheel liners lately - I got a set for both sides for my 1991 S4 - not cheap at about US$550 each plus freight. How much did you end up paying for the car? But - they would have to be a WHOLE lot better (like a totally different design) for me to think they were anything close to worth it - fool me once & all that...
I'd rather take a risk on Jerry's new design than risk the Porsche reruns here
(And that is exactly what I did do already...).

I ended up paying NZ$30K for the car, I'm sure I could've driven the price down a little further but I'm really actually hopeless at the bargaining.
I've put the car in for servicing with Stuart Ashby at Aero Automotive in Mangere - I work at the airport so it's handier for me than Motor Science, although Peter Booth was very good.

Well done - it is a nice car and he had $38K on it originally which was a bit rich for me - I had a drive in it and you could feel the vibration from the worn motor mounts. You will have much pleasure from owning this beast!

Seen a few 928s around Auckland this last year, most recently a white S4 outside Mitre 10 in Botany..

A good number of NZ Porsche owners run with Prestigio insurance. They understand that many of us want to experience our car's performance in relative safety on track, so are generally happy to provide cover for Driver's Ed/controlled track days etc (with a higher excess). Used to have a '79 928 and would love to see the GTS on track sometime BTW.
