I did it, 81 928 5spd, but at what price! I know Alfa inside and out, but Porsche.... I had a meltdown with the front engine harness, buggered the alternator, stuffed the battery. All is good now. New alternator, new battery and new harness. I'm ok with this, new part another 30 years. Now after several weeks of lovely driving, no spark. Power everywhere, but no spark. Ordered an cdi unit and waiting. Now I have read that a faulty coil can destroy a cdi. So what coil do I get? Is it standard? I might mention, my cdi diagnosis was made easy when I opened it there was water and bad corrosion/rust. I resoldered what I could see and cleaned it up but suspect it shorted out.

Welcome to the club sounds like yout off to a great start

NOTE if your CDI box is stuffed odds are good the green wire is also old,
can be verified by crumbling connectors and cracked outer sheathing

NOTE the green wire is the usual culprit for a non running engine .

if you suspect the coil then you need the correct part,
roger@928srus.com has them

well the 5 speed part is good. But 1981 is pretty old so expect lots of restoring and $$$ spending.

Welcome to the group.

Make sure along with the first parts order you get the cover for the jump post to keep water out of the new unit.

Got the cdi. You know, I don't think I even turned the key and it was running. Happy days. I think I might send my old box to Sydney. It will get a birthday for $350 with a 5 year warranty. As for the coil, I could not locate one nearby. I will get the correct part number or order from 928srus. I know old Alfas run the best when faulty components are replaced with new. The green wire is bright green and looks in good condition. Thanks for everyone's support. Can't wait to drive the car to work. Now to upload pictures?

Very nice! If the rest of the car matches this, you have done well!

It's only a 4.5 but I'm amazed by its performance.
