Default Will this shop crane work on a 928?

I have searched and cant figure out if people are having success with these or not. I need a engine hoist. Can anyone confirm if the reach and lift capacity will work on this one?

Yep, more success than I would prefer. Either of those will work fine, you just want to make a little investment in chains and hooks or carabiners. The load leveler is very handy, definitely get one if you opt for the HF unit.

I just pulled motors out of two Mercedes Benz 560SEL's with a harbor freight crane. I've also done numerous cast iron M117 motors and the odd Mercedes Benz 6.9 motor without problems so I don't expect that you'll have any problems with a 928 motor.

There are better cherry pickers, AC Hydraulics makes a very nice one, but HF works and is the cheapest. Load leveler essential, the nicer one with a screw and crank much preferred over the pipe with slots to lock the chain. Load leveler allows changing the angle during the lifting process, very very handy.

Many people with a cherry picker / shop crane are happy to lend it out as it is a PITA even folded up to store in most garages. Anybody around OC Calif that needs to use one and/or engine stand PM or start a thread, but they are not light weight, so needs something good sized to move it.

And here's mine transferring a rebuilt 81S from stand to crane.
Had to extend the jib to get close enough to the engine stand and this also made fitting it back in the car easier.

Im going to pull the 32V motor from my 88 and was going to use the HF Pittsburg 2 tonne lift but I cant get the hook over the center of the motor, its inline with the front of the block. The hydralic ram hits the bumper, and thats all the way extended. I have the load leveler also. I dont like the angle that is involved...with the chains...the engine for sure wont lift straight up.

Anyone got any more pictures?

Dean, I bought a Harbor Freight hoist perhaps 10 or 12 years ago. I have used it to remove / install several 928 engines, both 16v and 32 v. I have the little load leveler also but have not used it on the last couple. It seems to get in the way more than help IMO. I have just used a chain between the 2 lift points and have been able to adjust it accordingly to lift as needed. Didn't take all that long...

How close to center does your hook get? I know the engine has come forward at least an 1" to clear guide pins in the bell housing.

I have not used mine yet. However...you may can remove the front bumper to get a few more inches closer. I know its a lot of work but it might be required if you can not come at it any other way.

Should be more room if you come in from the side with the picker.

Mine looks same except its painted blue. It is just about big enough to get engine out and in without any extension.

If something better is available for similar $$$ I would skip this one. First hydraulic cylinder was leaking straight out of box. Warranty took care of that but second cylinder lasted just few lifts and only two years before it started to leak from everywhere. Changing seals didn't help as it was all worn out inside. Material and workmanship was so bad that it was miracle it had worked at all. Third one was around $70 since warranty had already run out. It seem to work for now but probably not for long. Quality hasn't improved at all.

I have the older orange version of the HF one, had no problems pulling out an M-100 engine which is a much bigger motor then the 928's.

I've used that HF unit untold times on my 928. From the front. From the side. I've finally go it so I can pull the engine without removing the hood. I'll remove the radiator and the AC condensor is gone so it can be nursed out the front.

Get the leveler and an extra chain. The official Porsche hoist adapter grabs the two obvious points plus the PS pump bracket. At least that's what I think it grabs and where I run the extra chain. Makes it hard to get just right. Check a workshop manual for a pic. It won't work with only a two-point connection.
