Default Issues with "old school" wheel locks.

I'm in need of help sorting out the wheel locks on my 86S. I have the key and the cup like doodad that fits over the lug but twisting the key doesn't seem to do much. How exactly do these cursed things work? Thanks!

Not well at all.....best to throw them as far away from the car as possible ! besides there is no real market for the S wheels, little risk of them walking away.

Default wheel locks

I plan to...But first i need to get them off the car. I didnt want to just put wrench to them and start cranking on them until something broke.

Key turns then pulls off lock to expose lug nut.

The ONLY people they prevent from removing the lock is the car owner The bad guys just used a hammer and a punch to blast the center out of the cover to access the lug nut.

Jim is right - take them off and throw them away - they are all crap just waiting to bite you...

Hopefuly you get away this time..

I spent 4 hours grinding away the remnants of a Porsche wheel lock - burried 4" deep in my rear GTS wheels. Taking it as delicately as possible it eventually came off but still not without some damage.

This was for a lock where I had the original key - but that key exploded in use and then the next new one exploded in the same way too...

Long gone now...

Same here, I just keep them since my car is 100% complete. But in a box on a shelf.

squirt some Kroil in the lock periodically, and they're fine.

I think they were standard, at least for some years. Our '88 came with them, not on the options list and not requested by the customer.

They are safely in a plastic bag, along with the official Porsche plastic gloves for changing tires, and the dealer-stamped warranty book.

WRONG! the way mine failed - no amount of lubrication would help - in fact it makes it even more likely the lock key will simply fail.

The later locks use an outer circumference key with ramp shaped tabs... if the lug is on way too tight or is paint anchored to the wheel - applying more torque to the key eventually simply builds stress in the outer circumference until it fractures in multiple places (literally explodes) - the two broken keys did half the total damage to my wheels... only fragments were still hanging together

Just take them off

Like others have said, wheel locks are easy (albeit a nuisance). Put in key, turn until it catches a side and then pull. I still use mine. I only have problems putting them back on, every time I pull out it pops out also.

The only person that is ever inconvenienced by wheel locks is the owner of the car.
