Well the engine moves & the radiator doesn't - so it must flex - plus you need some significant amount more flex somewhere to be able to install & remove (unless you just remove the air filter top and cross brace each time you need the tubes off? - possible but a little awkward...

After going through several concepts of how to fabricate some kind of jig to mount my trim router on the wood lathe so that it can be calibrated and adjusted to cut the accordian like groves around the tube in various places, and to do it very precisely, I came up with the use of aluminum bar stock that I have a bunch of, and that you may have seen in the start-up of many of my other projects. I think I have the design pretty well wired and have the basic material cut and milled, save for the holes and threads needed to put it together and make it work.

What I plan to do is clamp this devise to one of the tool rests on the lathe and then adjust it so it will cut a grove with the 3/8 inch cove bit only about 3/16 inch deep, with stops on the jig, and then be able to crank a bit of allthread just the right amount to move the jig to cut the next grove. I think it will work very well on the straight part of the new tube form, but I may still have to set it delibarately for each of the groves around where the tube necks down. Look at the drawing in the first post because that is still the profile I will be shooting for, at least for the front part of the tube.

Thanks Alan. My thought was that the silicone couplers would provide the space for installation, but I did not factor in engine movement.

Jerry,
So you will be turning both the lathe (blank) and router while plunging at regular intervals?

Lots of rotating going on!

Yes, Alan. Something like that; or maybe exactly like that.

Guy's, i do like all this stuff too (i am an engineer) and i know how it is by building something on your own but honestley, you can buy this intake pipes for 65 bucks a piece! So what is all this effort for?? Just for the fun of it?? I doubt they can be build to beat the price they are offered on the marked.
But count me in if they are wayyy better!!

Why or how would you put one or two of these in you GTS? Where can you buy these for 65 bucks? Or for any bucks for that matter.

Rich, you missed where this thread is about the intake pipes for the 85/86 32V motors - they are no longer available (NLA) from Porsche, so can not be bought. The S4 pipes will not fit the early 32V motors due to the much different airbox and intake manifold.

Don't be fooled by the eBay listings saying they're compatible. Part numbers will prove otherwise. I almost bought a pair online until I researched it. No dice.

The only way to get a pair of 85/86 32V intake tubes is from another owner or a parts car, granted that despite being almost 30 years old that they aren't disintegrating or have gaping holes patched with duct tape like so many of us have.

Look at the compatible list of cars, no 85 or 86 listed. They are different!
