Default Oil pump swap Q

I have a noise I am trying to track down and I suspect oil pump.

I have another engine of same year that I can swap the pump from for a test.

is this OK to do?

Wondering why you think it is the oil pump, that's a lot of work just to do a "test" swap.
Is this on the '81?

yes on my 81. 56K miles.

noise is a rpm dependent "whine". not normal. for sure mechanical, not vacuum or something intake related.

not AC/ALT/SMOG/or PS pump. not Fan. just replaced tensioner, roller, and all belts. WP has only 1500 miles (done by PO in 2009) and is a LASO. noise is concentrated on front of engine in the V.

because WP has low mile I suspect less. local 928 friends Speedtoys and Jim Morton suggested maybe Oil pump.

less timing belt tension = less noise (volume), more tension=louder noise.

oh and it was there prior to my TB work. but its less so now.

No, and the noise was present prior to my TB replacement.
