Hey Rob, do you know of a way to find original owner information for a 10 digit (1978) 928 VIN?
I have been looking for a car my Dad sold in 1986-and might have found it. He doesn't have any paperwork from the car (28 yrs ago)-
VIN 9288200500, which I believe decodes to 928, 1978, US engine (2), and number 500.

Short answer is, no. But let me make sure I understand- your Dad owned the car until '86 BUT was not the first owner? And you think that 9288200500 is the car he owned? And he knows/knew the name of the first owner? I'm not sure PCNA kept track of the car's original owner at that time, though you'd think they would, for warranty purposes. Might be worth a call to Porsche services:

Alternatively, (assuming this 1986 transaction was in KS), maybe the Kansas DMV has really liberal laws about releasing previous owner information? I once managed to track an old corvette in Wisconsin back to 1980, maybe Kansas is similarly helpful?
Perhaps this form?

First-Thanks! You kick ***. Second-you are right. My Dad bought the car in 1978 and sold it in 1986 when I was 14. The car I found is in the city he sold it to, and was bought "from the original owner in Kansas City". Same color, pinstripe interior, 5 speed. Paint on the drivers rear quarter is different than the rest of the car (my Dad backed into a tree on that side in 84). there is a lot that says this is the car.
Now for the bad news. Owner wants waaaaaaaaaaay too much for it. Hasn't moved/ran in over 14 years. In fact it's been in a barn with the windows down for that period of time. The pictures are nothing short of scary. It's really worth more in parts than it is complete-to everyone on the planet except possibly me.
**update** if anyone was following this-it's not my Dad's car. Another one from KC just like it. So, back to the search...

Here is the master Vin thread ... https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...in-thread.html
First 1978 US + Can car was 9288200011
I don't know what the split up of US and Canadian cars would be, but yours is the 634th 1978 car, but would be referred to as number 645.
Number 500 is referred to in post #368 above, and here's a thread on #30 ... https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...ue-thread.html.

Rob,
Is there any chance you could decode the vin from my '83?
I looked online & the links looked dead (autoatlanta & suncoast) no sticker in the trunk either :-(

Thanks
