86.5 instrument lighting oddity - the "Servo" lamp
I've got the dash out for a refresh and HVAC work, and one of the jobs is an update to the instrument lighting. I couldn't find the EL gauge faces I wanted, so I'm making my own - that will be the subject of another thread here shortly, and I'm also replacing the instrument bulbs with LED's.
So I have the instrument pod on my desk, using a little flashlight to illuminate the warning light legends to double check colors, etc. and I have found something I think is undocumented here on the list, and also in the shop manual Wiring Diagrams:
For one thing, you can see K11 "Ex Catalyst" is there, the bulb is in place, but the lens (symmetrically placed on the left to the high beam indicator on the right) is non-transparent. Interesting. But the really intriguing find is the un-numbered bulb right above K9 on the diagram. There is a warning legend for this bulb on the gauge face - "Servo". Anyone have a clue? Note that both bulbs are wired in, on the board as well as in the diagram.The only thing I can think of right offhand is maybe it has a diagnostic purpose - my WAG. Alan??

They added several additional (unused) slots over the different versions of the panels - even the latest digi dash has unused slots for USA (labelled on the rear of the board). Some may have just become obsolete, some were for features on some models for specific countries (esp. Japanese models).
Here is an example on a late digi-dash panel (thanks to Ed for the pic):
Check Engine & Cat (temp) lights not populated.
Cat temp monitor warning is wired to the digi-dash controller - so I assume it would work with a bulb installed (however its likely also a digi dash measage now instead - haven't checked). The Check Engine light is wired but the bulb is unpopulated in digidash cars (a hold over? - assume it also is a digi message now).
Likely on yours someone has refreshed the bulbs before and just populated these too

Servo = power steering.
AFAIK, used only on 944S along with pressure sensor for rack - 944 606 209 00.
'85-'88 cluster and gauges are somewhat interchangeable with 944.

The trailer light is interesting, too. (I used it once for a knock indicator light.)

Thanks gents- I knew the answer(s) would be found here. Ken: servo = power steering- atf level, pressure? I see it is actually not used in the harness. And When I was working on the first iteration of my EL dash instruments I thought about using the trailer light indicator for the turn signals because of a physical wiring problem. And Alan, makes perfect sense that different versions would have different functions populated. Happy New Year, and thanks for the info!

Digging up old thread. The 85 euro I am restoring had the SERVO lamp on my gauges as well. Looks like someone added a light that shouldn't be there. Thanks for the intel guys!!!
