I'd always get a gas smell in the cab while at stops, eventually i decided to investigate and found my Y connector was broken, the charcoal canister was bad too, so i decided to just bypass the entire thing and pull it out.

My new plastic "Y" pipe broke after a few thousand miles. Be careful during the install. They may look beefy but their brittle.

Two hardware stores down here have the copper pieces. Looks and feel like a boat anchor. I bought some garden irrigation pieces to play with, but I think I'll ad one to my wishlist from Rodger.

DZGunner, when you bypassed the canister, did you just connect the inlet and outlet pipes and dumped the canister?

On my 87 s4 i completely took the canister out, and as you said, connected the "from tank" vent hose and the "atmosphere" line. they are almost side by side beneath the coolant resevior. The "atmosphere" line is just that, its a line that goes all the way to the back again and vents to atmosphere, if you lift your car and look between the bumper and the gas tank, there is an open hose just hanging there, that's where it ends, and that's where mine vents out to. to prevent any vapor from getting in the cab from this area i extended the hose a little with some generic fuel hose to make it just barely clear the bottom of the rear bumper.

The hose that has the purge valve going to the intake has been removed and at one point plugged off.

This picture shows the hose that bypasses the charcoal canister and goes straight to the back

This is the little bit of hose that extends at the back to vent fuel vapor
