Default Hairline Crack on top of Overflow Tank

I just noticed today a hairline crack on the top of the radiator overflow tank. Never noticed it before until today, as I opened the hood after running it and noticed some minor bubbling coming out of the crack near the top center indent. The indent has some wetness, so that may be from the leak. There's no leakage on the ground, so it must be minor. Fluid is right exactly where it should be.

Is this a simple repair? Could do an overflow replacement, or just epoxy the crack.

Any recommendations?

Get a new tank.....it is not an overflow but part of the pressurized cooling system and very important that it hold the pressure to prevent coolant from boiling in the engine...

I figured that would be the answer. I'll reach out to Roger about the part. Is it relatively easy to install?

it can be hard to reach the rear mounting bolt.....but you can cut up the old tank for access if you need to.

So how do you put that bolt back after installing the new expansion tank?

I think most people leave the tank in the car with two bolts.

At least the LHD part is affordable! The RHD unit is crazy , around A$600 last I heard. I replaced my tank with an alloy one out of a maker in Brisbane a few years ago for A$200 ish. You have 928motorsports doing a LHD one in alloy even cheaper now.

Yes and no. The only time I did it, I was cursing. I could do the same job again in 20-30 minutes.

It was essential to have hose puller pliers.

I bought mine at harborfreight.

Two things I'd add to your shoping list: new hose that goes on the bottom of the tank (you'll never have better access) and a new gasket for the float sensor (you'll have to unscrew the sensor from the old tank and install it in the new--chances are good the gasket is toast.) I'd probably round the project out by adding a new tank cap for good measure.

If you really want to go "hog wild", remove the window cleaner fill neck so you'll have more access to move the tank around and remove hoses. For $70 you can replace that too (assuming it's crappy brown and probably cracked from the steel insert inside the fender wall.)

Good luck!

Last I heard, the OEM plastic replacement had gone up in price again.

Here is ours: http://www.928motorsports.com/parts/..._reservoir.php

I have also been told that the plastic filler necks for the windshield washer reservoir are now $100 each. I'm sorry I don't have an answer for that one.

washer fill neck is spendy. but once you have it, you will be happy.

I bought one of Carl's tanks (well my wife did for an xmas gift for me 4 years ago). I like it. Only complaint is you can't see coolant level. Then again, why do we have a level sensor on our cars if we don't rely on it?
