Default Steering rack

I'm just wondering if anyone knows of the procedure for setting the rack/pinion gear preload in the steering rack, I'm thinking about rebuilding mine because of it's leaks and all around ****tyness, but if i cant get any info (torque specs and and other specified procedures), then I probably won't try to pioneer anything.

Hi,
from my experience the pre-load is determined by a spring pushing against the rack rod. Could be wrong about this though?

The spring is decoration, the rack & pinion clearance is set by the washer which is under the same cap- and which is actually a selected shim. thickness seems to vary from 2.0-2.5 mm if memory serves.
