Cool Alternators

I know many of you say to use only the recommended Porsche Alternators and anything else is a sin. Has anyone else used an alternator other than the Bosche or the Paris rhone. I remember some people using a delco. My question is, can I use something else than what is reccommended if whe outputs (watts) were the same?

If your car still has the original alternator, my first suggestion is to find a good auto electric shop - not a standard repair garage, or import shop, an electric shop that repairs starters, alternators, generators and motors. They should be able to repair or rebuild your unit at a reasonable cost. You will be sure that it will fit, and that it will work.

It doesn't have the origional alternator. It has a Bosch that I found out later is for an audi.

Noel,

I have an alternator out of an 85 shark if your interested. I know its not a Delco. Do you still have the fresh air shroud for the alternator? If not, it is advised to get one and the hose to go with it. I remember someone having a part number for the hose from a Pepboy's or Autozone.

I have the 85 and the 84's shroud and I have the hose to. I would most definetly be interested in the alternator. Does it still work or does it need a rebuild?

Alternators are ALMOST alternators....not all the same, even if output rating is same. Some measure the V they are charging against internally (IIRC, 'machine sensed'), others have a separate lead from battery, some have a tacho output terminal, sometimes used to keep injection going. We once put a Delco on a Range Rover, but its output was a bit too spiky for the EFI brain, and it misbehaved, had to switch back to original type Marelli.
therefore, YMMV.....
