I just bought the "right battery" but it's wrong. :(
I just went down to the Bosch dealer to buy a new battery from my car, after the crap chinese one it came with finally died.
I looked in their magic book of part numbers and there it was under PORSCHE 928 77-82, P/N BB 0 093 S56 615, It's a 66Ah hour battery. It looked smaller than the one that came out but it's the "right" one. So i said good buy to my friends and family as I excavated the whole car (slight exageration) to get to the battery compartment. The battery that came out was much longer and it was a 88Ah battery. I managed to get the battery leads to fit but the Positive lead only comes out a short way so I have to stretch the negative cable over to the negative terminal. In doing that it goes taught which means that the battery box lid will not close.
Some one has installed a islator switch next to the hand brake and I think they have messed with the lead that goes from postivie on the battery to the starter motor.
Any advice?

Return the battery. If the negative lead is stretched where the lid will not shut, then you have a problem. I'm guessing that by having the correct battery, the positive lead issue will resolve itself as well..... regardless of up stream installations.

Group 48 or 49 Battery
If you need an inexpensive battery replacement, I have had excellent results with this one. This is not the factory specification. I am using it at my own risk. I could not quite bring myself to pay 3 times as much for the similar sized factory spec battery. However, I don’t have the upper tie down strap. The strap might still fit. I really don’t need the tie down strap. The battery fits really well down in its hole.
Battery 12 Volt
48/91-1: Part number
Brand: Autocraft Silver
Vendor: Advance Auto Parts
Cranking Amps: 870
Cold Cranking Amps: 700
Reserve Capacity: 120
As long as the battery is the right size, battery posts interface properly with cable connectors, tie downs interface well, cold cranking power is adequate, it is a 12 volt automotive type, I think the battery will work fine.
If anyone knows another criteria for a proper battery, I am curious to determine what else makes it right.
Ps. Others have said that the correct battery is a group 49 rather than 48. Any parts store should be able to give you the proper group number.
