honestly with this engine if you want to keep it your going to have to take it apart, everything I read does not sound good. Someone posted how their timing chain came off and damaged the valves. A lot of valve damage stories

on this message board their are a lot of people who work on their cars. When I had a automatic transmission problem I found some good help from here but when I went to a Mercedes vehicle forum I found outstanding detailed with pictures attached help (it's their auto transmission). I would recommend going to a popular BMW forum, one with millions of post. I am sure they have BMW specialist that can tell you exactly what is wrong with your car and possibly have pictures

just as you were still driving your S-4 trying to make it home....odds are your son ALSO continued to drive after the BMW started eating coolant and did in fact overheat the engine. That would explain the lack of compression as the overheated piston rings lose tension and no longer seal.....
That desire to "make it home" has ruined many cars, just how it is...

Jim, you sound so cynical! "It ran fine the last time I drove it, what could possibly go wrong that would make it just stop?" "It was only a few miles to the next exit, where I know I can add some water to it. It should have been OK for that short distance. And after a while it stopped steaming so it probably fixed itself. Then it wouldn't go any more. Maybe it's just a loose hose."

Not making fun of the OP and the situation, because it is serious. At the same time though, I cringe when I hear folks say that they haven't had to do a thing to it previously, then suddenly X happens, serious X. Reactive maintenance programs are seriously more expensive than good PM programs. Older cars, especially those that have been effectively placed on the reactive repair track, are ticking time bombs. People buy new cars so they don't have to suffer through all the stuff that craps out with age and neglect. Folks griped about spending $1k a visit on their new German cars, so manufacturers bundle the first couple years of minimum PM into the new purchase or lease. See how cheap they after they are off of warranty/maintenance? There's a reason.
