car speakers
Hello everyone, I am currently purchased interior parts for my vehicle and I am going to also buy speakers. I have noticed their is two speakers on each door. When I looked at the crutchfield website it says their they have a pair of speakers for the door and comes with a 1" tweater. Is the one inch tweater built into the speakers or external? I just want to replace all the audio equipment and possibly have someone test / repair the amp (has sentimental value).

The best door replacement speakers are component speakers (separate tweeter and a crossover that is mounted inside the door), but some owners only replace the 4" speaker with a coax speaker that has both the 4" speaker and the tweeter. This is probably what Crutchfield has available.
4" component sets are very hard to find these days, and finding a set that is shallow enough to fit our cars is even harder. The web is full of online stores that show they have certain MBQuart models that should work, but when you try to buy them, they are out of stock.
I have had very good luck with Diamond D343's, but they are discontinued. I like these speakers in my 86.5 so much, that a couple of weeks ago I stopped by the stereo place across town where I bought them years ago, and was surprised to find that they had 2 pairs, new in the box, covered with dust in their storage room. I bought both sets and will use one in my 87. The other set is available for $100, PM me if interested. I am driving these speakers from an external 4 channel amp and they sound great. You really need a sub though to get rich sound in a 928.

Hans sells an excellent set of custom designed after market speakers.
I have installed the door set and they sound very good.
Do a search on here.

I have been told that my '88 sounded "Pretty Good"
All MB Quart:
Front Seperates
- RCE-210
2x 1in tweeters
2x 4in mids
in door crossover
Middle (back seat)
- DKD 116
2x 6.5in Coax mids/tweeters
in line crossover
Rear Coax
- RWE 100
2x 4in Coax mids/tweeters

The sizes are near fits and will require a little playing with but anything other than factory will.

I am not an audio expert but what kind of crossover do you use a passive or active? How do you find a crossover that matches the speakers.
Also does the 928 have stock crossovers for all the speakers? Does anyone know how to test them if so?

Forgot to mention that the grills that come with the Diamond D343's are black and look very similar to stock. I used the Diamond grill for the 4" and gutted the stock tweeter with a Dremel, and glued the Diamond tweeter into the body of the stock tweeter, so I could keep the stock tweeter grill. I like the stock look, but of course the tweeter rings tend to break, so you still have to deal with that issue.
I hear Hann's speakers are awesome too.

what are the tweater rings, if they break are the tweaters bad? i really would like to keep all the same brand if possible. I head that blaupunkt speaker company had been bought out, my car had a blaupunkt radio when I bought it. I should see if the cassette player works before i throw it away.

The grills on the stock speakers are held on by the outer plastic rings that can be screwed off to remove the grill. These rings break often and are hard to find used. The tweeters and speakers are fine if the ring breaks but the grills won't stay on.
