It sounds like engine 'pinging' but I don't think it is.

Knowing that the maximum range of the knock control system is a 9 degree retard, I would be surprised if the noise you hear is detonation.

Even if you have a faulty knock sensor the default global 6 deg retard should be more than enough to prevent any detonation.

Piston slap ?

A disintegrated or missing ball cup bushing for the clutch release arm can sound like engine pinging. (The release arm cup vibrates on the ball.)

You can examine the bushing with the airbox off.

Or, if with a little pressure on the clutch pedal the 'pinging' goes away, then you know what's up...

Piston slap? (Gulp!) What is the piston slapping against?

I added a bottle of Techron to an empty gas tank, then added only twelve gallons of 93 octane (as recommended by Techron.) The pinging was still there but seemed to be "softer." If that makes sense.
