autocross choices
So I've also got a 1986 Porsche 944 NA that I've restored. It's got the full sport suspension from Koni and I've been autocrossing it for 3 years. I've only recently obtained the 84 928s. Although my same autocross rims will fit I'm wondering what it would be like to autocross it. The one complaint of the 944 is I wish it had more power. But it's balance is amazing. I'm sure the 928 would be more power but I wonder if it wouldn't be a bit like riding a water buffalo. Any one else explored this? Suspension is stock on the 928

The 944 is going to be faster on a tight course... look at PCA CLASSES or POC and you see where cars are placed to be "competitive" base on HP to weight. Problem is horsepower to weight is JUST acceleration but braking and cornering are also greatly impacted by weight.
You can certainly have fun running a 928 , sounds great and you usually are the ONLY 928 at a track event. They handle well but even the old very brown 1980 weighs a bit over 3,000 lbs after a few parts fell off

I beat all the 944 AND 951 at our autocross events in my GTS. In fact, I usually beat everything else not on competition tires (under 200 tread wear). When I had both a 88 951S and 90GT both with very well setup suspension mods, the 951 had autocross tires and the 928 ultra high performance street tires, the 928 was 2 seconds slower for a 70 second lap on the same course with me driving. At the 3 events I took both cars 951 set FTD and 928 second fastest overall.
