Clutch noise?
Hi all
I have an 88 S4 5 speed manual with 57k on the odo.
Noticed this colder morning that when I placed the car in neutral and let out the clutch at a dead stop, a mild repetitive squeaking noise was coming from the engine compartment. I could also hear it when pulling away from the stop. Clutch in, the sound stops.
Clutch seems strong, everything else seems fine. The car is getting better as little problems keep getting fixed. Even drove it to Phoenix and back last weekend. Everybody on the road was in a hurry and doing well over 80 both directions! Car ran like a champ and passed strongly into triple digits. Also got 22 MPG round trip!
Anything to worry about?
Thanks in advance
Brian

It sounds like perhaps the throwout bearing is going out or as I have experienced in the past, the two bolts that hold the guide tube in place will back out and the head will rub on the spline coupler. I posted a vide of my car doing this a long time ago. I'll see if I can find it and link it here so you can compare.

Wow! Ok! Bell housing off?
Is this something a handy noob should tackle? If so, does anyone have instructions on the procedure? I have slowly been challenging myself with more intensive repairs both electrical and mechanical, but this one may be more than I can do myself. BTW, I paid someone to do the TB/WP/Porktensioner for me because I was intimidated by the complexity.

You can totally take the lower bell housing off. You won't hurt anything. Just make sure that you do not press the clutch pedal while the slave has nothing to press against. Look up inside and see if you can see anything.
