Default '88 S4 @ Porsche Victoria

Hi everyone. I'm a longtime lurker and presently a 944 owner. The 928's have always been a favorite but a concern of running costs has always deterred me. But now it may be time to bite the bullet.

Does anyone have any information on this car? All the salesman has been able to tell me is that it came into Canada in 2012 and was originally sold in New York. Supposedly they are getting together the maintenance records in order for a potential buyer to look at. Sorry I can't provide anymore info. I thought had seen a VIN for it somewhere but can no longer find the web page.

It seems fairly pricey, but what do I know ........ I'm counting on the brain trust to enlighten me. And if anyone knows a place in Victoria, BC that can provide a good PPI, please chime in.

Two ads, same car ........

Thanks in advance.

The full VIN is WP0JB0928JS861368 (from here). I didn't find any further info, although a Carfax might.

Looks pretty clean. Despite the low miles, $20K might be a little bit dear for an S4. I'm sure there's haggle room in there. Now if it was a 5spd...

You forgot option code M018b.... 80s retro steering wheel cover.

That option may actually make it worth the asking price.

I go to sleep knowing nada and wake up to all of this. Pretty awesome. Thanks for all of this.

I was hoping perhaps someone knew of its personal history. The salesman stated that it was traded in on a newer 928 that they assisted in finding for the owner. Someone with a passion like that for the cars, well I kinda assumed he would be on here as well.

Thats a clean looking one. I can't comment on relative value. Don't know of anyone in Victoria that could do PPI. Scan automotive in North Van did a lot of work on mine before i owned but they are not much help to you on the island.

But i think you need to keep on them about producing some/all of maintenance records for you. Especially TB and fuel line work. They say they know the PO but i would be surprised if they kept any records unless the work was done at their shop and since it came in 2012, they likely didn't. No records, i would discount accordingly. Check for rust underneath on NY car but may not have seen many winters.

Reddog2 ....... I have heard good things about Scan Automotive and have gone by the shop a couple of times. However seeing as it is a 1.5 hr and $100 ferry ride each direction, I think it would be difficult for a seller to let the car get that far away.

I'm guessing TB is Timing Belt? I asked about that, supposedly 2 years and 6000 km ago. At their price I would have expected a fresh one in there. Even though the mileage is minimal, the thing is half gone on it's calendar life.

As for fuel lines, I've seen a few prices for the '85 and older models that went for about $110, anyone have knowledge of the pricing differences on the '88's if it is required?

If there isn't fairly complete records, that is a different kettle of fish. One thing that sold me on my 944 was every record from the original bargaining with the salesman to the day I bought it. And when I heard New York, rust was the first thought in my head as well.

Okay, how does the VIN to Option Code thing work? It's like a magic trick...

Shawn,
You put the VIN into PET and it gives you the information. You do need an up to date version of PET.

Looks like the interior is in good shape and so is the engine compartment and every looks clean including the engine compartment!!!!

I wouldn't trust them with doing the 928 tbelt anyway. Same with the fuel lines, who knows what type of brand they used.

Well it is low mileage, now the question is do they have the receipts to backup that mileage.

Ahh... Okay, and that takes a sneaky-pete download. I only need it this one time. Can someone do me the honors? My option codes tag is MIA: WP0JA0921CS820828

Thanks in advance.

May be a bit expensive. A Canadian GT with less than 70,000 km was sold for less than 25,000$ (from a Montreal Porsche dealer...) this spring.

Sorry - yes by TB i meant timing belt. I doubt they would have put a new one in prior to sale. The records thing could be used for negotiating, if they can dig up nothing or partial. Personally, i would not let that be the deciding factor.

I have no direct experience with Scan and i understand they are across the way from you. My only experience with them was 1/2 hour on the phone while they went through all the work they did on my car (while it was with the PO) over the last 10 years - i was impressed with them taking the time to do this and the knowledge they seemed to have.
