Gents,
once again I ask you to shed light on some mysteries....
Q1: There`s that hose right next to the coolant reservoir, that connects to the vacuum system... And then there is the nipple on the side of the air box. It is closed and there is no opening that would allow air to pass.
Q2: My repair manual specifies the firing order, but there is no reference which points on the distributors connect to what cylinders. The 2 middle wires were apparently connected wrong on the drivers side. After reversing them the engine ran considerably better.
Does someone here have a reference for the 1986.5 (distributors on the camshaft gear covers).
Thank you in advance.

That's hose should go to the valve for the cat air pump and the air box has a connection for it.
Most replacement covers have it blocked off if it's not used.
If it were unblocked and you were not going to use the air pump (many have been removed) then the port on the air filter box would need to be blocked off, however it is on the filtered side.
There is a label on the radiator that shows ignition wire and cap firing order, I can not send it from my phone![Frown](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/frown.gif)
edit: had to think on it![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Right distributor 4, 6, 7, 1
left distributor 5, 2, 3, 8

On the 'S4 cars the corresponding spark plug connections are cast into the cam covers above/around the perimeter of the distributor caps. Not sure about the S3 cars but worth a look.

Your welcome, also on the air box bottom you show, that wouldn't be on the "filtered" side, the one I was thinking about is on the bottom of the right side of the TOP cover.
I would leave it plugged, look for the connection on the top cover

S3 cam covers have the numbers forged for cylinder-distributor connections. Just clean it up a bit with a rag and you'll see them.
On the stock radiator or AC condenser, there should be stickers also that show the connection order. Or at least, you should still have them hopefully. Every other 928 owner I've met always comments how mine are still there and (somewhat) intact.
