Default First 50,000 miles on my/your 928.... story time

My first 50K miles

So, I picked my baby up about 2.5 years ago with ~91K miles on the clock for a good price. In just about 2-yrs of driving I have run her over the 141K miles marker on the clock.

I can tell you that out of the more cars than I want to admit I have owned, this baby is the most fun all around. Power, fun, comfort. Whoo-hooooo!

The last 5K of the ~51K I have had one of Greg’s 6.5L super motors and full drive train (posi rear, new torque tube, etc)…

The car went from fun to “Holy sh*t, this is amazing”! I am looking forward to the next 50K which I expect will take less than 2 years! Look for other high praise on Greg Brown for making my fun daily driver into heaven on wheels….

Goal, 1Million miles plus…

Best couple stories:
o Road trip with my kids around Arizona to see all of the National parks. North east AZ national park in the middle of nowhere and "speed mound" hidden in the dust on a dirt road and Airborne!!! Did the rims no favors, but she kept moving like it never happened
o Last trip to San Fran - running with a new Cayman, Charger and Camero... ... I had the car of the day on that 150 mile stretch with them

What were other’s thoughts for folks first 50K?

I picked up my car at Greg Brown's shop in 2009 with 98,000 on it. The first 50,000 haven't come yet but I am really close, like 3,000 miles away. It has been a blast. Done a few cross country trips including the day I picked it up and drove home to Iowa from California. Done a jump in and go to Atlanta for the weekend. Drove to Dallas to see Roger and the crew.
All in all I love having a supercar. Now I have about 2,000 miles on the superchared engine and am having a blast (Victor's kit). No overheating, great power.
Have things gone wrong over the years, sure, but they are expected age related things and I can't complain.
If you are reading this and thinking about getting a 928, do it. They are super fun!

50k? I don't know about that. I've only had mine one year. I just turned 3k on it last week.

But it's been great. The car is running fine. I keep doing little fixes here and there, I've finally gotten my "Done" list longer than the "Need To Do" list.

I've been using it for a semi-DD, running around town and a few short trips 30-40 miles each way.
I did the Motor Mounts a couple weeks ago and finally took a good trip. 500 miles total. Up to Upper Michigan and home in a big loop. My mom (75 years old) came along because she wanted to try it on a long trip. She wants to roadtrip to the west coast in it.

WOW! Power, fun, comfort. The total package.

Okay, I haven't done 50K miles but I have done 6K over the year I have had it. I bought it from a body shop in Los Angeles through craigslist.
It had been sitting 12 years before I got a-hold of it. I bought it with no history or paperwork, and only knew that it had been in their family for a long time and trusted their word that it was running 6 months prior to me buying it.
First day I go it,I had it towed on a flat bed to my house, bought a battery put some gas in it and it started right up.
Bought some tires, had it smogged (passed with flying colors), and put in a new windshield. The interior was already mostly reupholstered so I only needed the parts for the doors redone.
Not bad for a $1000 1981. I have been slowly working on it since and use it as my DD. In other words it is my W.I.P Work In Progress. I bought it with money I got from selling cookies to the caterer of the most recent Star Trek movie when I was 15. And yes I pay for almost everything I do to it including all parts and most of the labor (what I can't do myself which is very little). It has never let me down or broken down. The only direction is up at this point. Oh ya, I also forgot to mention I crashed it in the first 6 months of having it on the road. Fixed it, kept its clean title and still drive it. this car has so much more left to do and so much more to learn about it. The fun never ends .

I'm not close. Had 23,000 when I got it 11 years ago, about 54,000 now. Works out to about 2800 miles a year while I've owned it.

Current rate puts me at 50,000 driven by me in only 7 more years

Couple years after finding my slate blue metallic '83 I moved to Edina, tony Minneapolis suburb, and Daunte Culpepper, driving his burnt orange Ferrari, a 430 I think, gave the 928 thumbs up while we drove next to one another on France Avenue. Not much of a football fan but the acknowledgment was cool from a guy who could afford just about any whip on the planet.

Y'all need to get out and drive more gents. These babies run better the more ride them hard .

I need to swap a couple antilock break sensors on mine right now, but that is easy work

I just crossed my 50k in the GT. I got it with 202k miles and now it has over 253k and still running like a champ, supercharger and all.

Nice stories. I spread mine around; 11k on motorcycles, 8k F150, 5k 928 per year. Starting to drive the 928 more. 928 farthest trip....to 928 intl. October '12.

Estimate only 15k over 3 years but 80% back country roads and high speed through the desert. Stock 81's are still fun. I wish I could drive how fast the car really wants to go more often. Makes me sad at times going 70.

Twice a week I get to go 110-120 for short time on way home from work if safe to do so. Keeps me sane.

I bought my (first) 928 when my 944 needed a clutch.

I got a quote for a specialist shop to do the the clutch, and once I picked up my jaw, I decided that maybe I could do it myself.

But it would take me time - I am in IT not wrenching, so I figured to take months over it, and I would need a car in the meantime.

So adding it up:
- months of not paying to hire a car
- savings on the 944 clutch job
- a little "adjustment"
and I figured that I could "justify" a cheap 928 to drive while I worked on the clutch in the 944.

I knew their reputation for being a money pit, and I knew that I couldn't afford a good one, so i went for a Japanese import LHD - rated well mechanically, but a little rough cosmetically. I could live with that. Bought at auction in Japan, then put on a boat to Fremantle - $768 Japan to Western Australia.

When it arrived, I did the mandatory TB-WP, plugs, rotors, caps, oil change, brake-pads, transmission flush, coolant flush, headlight conversion, tyres and alignment - and then I drove it, and drove it, and drove it. Daily to work, long trips to visit family, weekends away to just drive it.

It has let me down only once - when the fuel pump fuse blew in the car-park at work. Rennllist, and the 928 Specialists fuse chart had me going again in 20 minutes.

I keep finding things to fix, and it gets better and better the more I drive it.

The 944 is back on the road, and to be honest if I want to drive I prefer it over the 928, but if I want to cover distance, that gorgeous V8 and relaxed manner win every time.

Bought my GTS in 2003 with 160k kilometers (100k miles) and today we are at 231k kilometers (143k miles). I don't qualify 100% but this car is just a joy to drive.

Never had any big issues and that kept me stranded. Biggest deal so far were the torque converter bearings, but the car still drove with a bad bearing without problems.

The car has seen a lot. Was probably the one and only non federalized 1992 GTS in the US from 2004 to 2006. The car just does it all with ease: 2000 km move to Spain, 270 km/h plus on the Autobahn, pick up the kids from school, drive in style to a concert, cruise on a small road near the alps or make people wonder what it is (my favorite).

This GTS was the first in the world with the now standard Roger silicone oil pan gasket. Still no leaks

Over the years the car received multiple small upgrades to keep it reliable and happy. Car is close to stock with the exception of a RMB, PorKensioner, 2.2 differential (S4) and interior light upgrades..

I just love this car, performance, comfort and how easily you can push the limit in it without the fear of loosing your GTS.

Just sold my 944 S2 after 18 years. The 944 is a good car but there is just no comparison to a 928. Besides the transaxle setup they are completely different animals.

Good news: the prices for the late model 928 are climbing slowly in Germany. It took many years to realize that this is a real and rare collector's item. Last year only 662 GTS were still registered in Germany....
This year only 661 because my GTS sleeps under a plam tree near the beach each night now...

also a DD car, which has only been about 6k miles in two years, but am proud to say I have only spent half as much for parts as to what I originally paid for the car.
