Cool radiating heat

I have a 79 that I have done over and I use on nice days. Sometimes when its really hot & humid (northeast) there is an awful lot of heat that comes through the drivers side fire wall. I have been in the passengers side and it doesn't feel that bad. I think the fuse panel and wood take care of that. Should there be any kind of insulation on the inside or outside of the firewall? Is this a common problem? The heater fan isn't running and all the vents are closed. I don't know what it feels like with the a/c running, this is my next project. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Don't know about a '79, but the later years had exhaust heat shields that take care of some of this. Maybe some have been removed and not replaced along the years. Also, bad motor mounts can allow the engine to "sink" lower and cause the insulation around the tunnel to not work as it is supposed to.
