Why do the L-Jet cars have the cold start air/fuel enter through the back of the cylinder heads?

Is this the remnants of the K-jet EGR system?
What is the internal plumbing of the head, ie. where does the mixture actually enter the regular intake tract?

They get to feed 8 ports with one injector PLUS put the fuel / air down in the port during the cold start warm up cycle . Somewhat more efficient than spraying a burst of fuel into the top of the intake plenum
