Default temp guage harness (cluster)

I am having a problem with the temp guage on one of my '86.5's Years ago while removing the cluster the hold down tabs on the wiring harness for the temp guage were broken off. Now the connector just slides on but does not lock down.

The problem I have is sometimes the temp guage reads correct, but then it will peg to high. For quite awhile a sharp slap to the pod itself would correct and guage would read normal. I have found that if I reach under pod to the harness and push on connector toward me the guage will be correct.

Has anyone experienced this? Has anyone spliced another connector as a replacement? If so are there any problems or tricks?
