Sean posted a way to jumper the starter and the 14 pin connector to jump post. Do you have 12 volts at jump post, pass fender?

Alarm will not disable starter, btw.

Everything can test great on voltage, but not pass current. Seems like a few corroded connections here and there drive the system below threshold voltage / current and take the car down.

Replace all, clean all. At 6 years down, you are doing a rescue/refresh, not a troubleshoot.

Alarm jumper is a simple fix, thin Black/red wire to thicker Yellow wire on the flat 8 pin connector leaving the panel. The wires are nearly adjacent IIRC, maybe one other wire in between them, do a search, we've posted that wiring diag before with instructions.

If it wasn't a very savvy 928 mechanic, then I'd be retracing everything in the reciept.

All those origninal 53 relays need to go. New battery, new battery ground strap (no kidding). Clean engine-to-frame ground strap. Valley grounds.

I do have a bunch of 86.5 related stuff so, let me know if you need things where a used part will work. I love your car and if you do it right, she will pay you back over many years.
Thank you, do you know if the engine and electric parts of the '85 are compatible with the 86.5?

How hard is it to pull the engine on these cars? My jeep and 3 series BMW have a lot more room under the hood to work, lol.

OK thanks, I hear you. I`ll just go from point to point and start cleaning/ tightening whatever needs to be done. The good thing is, I`m in AZ, so there`s not much going on in terms of corrosion, and the car was garaged during her "hibernation".

OK, cleaned and tightened ground spots, 12 V on jump post - check.
Found that the starter solenoid was shot, replaced the starter since the solenoid was not available separately and the car cranks. However I have taken apart the intake manifolds, pulled and cleaned the injectors in an ultrasonic bath and afterwards with carb cleaner from a syringe, the injectors connected to a motorcycle battery, clicking them on and off.
Waiting for a set of new gaskets and seals...

Great, you are on a better path.

Alan, our resident expert electrical guy, is also in AZ.

His groundstrap failed. Why? Bat compart not vented, corrosion occured due to that.

Looks like you are on the way to getting it going. However, your's is not an S4. The S is for the S version of the car, although I don't know that at that time there was any other version of the car, such as a non S, but the 4 in S4 is not for the number of valves per cylinder but rather for the 4th generation or version of the 928. Therefore your 86, even a later 86, known here as the 86.5, is, along with the 85, an S3, but that desgination was never attached formally to the car. The S4 came out in 87.

Congratulations. Looks like it is going to be a nice save.

Well, as per 10/22/2013 the car is officially driveable. It still needs work here and there, but it runs good.

I was somewhat concerned that the $50 generic fuel pump wouldn`t do the trick, but it seems to work quite nicely. Maybe I`ll swap it for a Bosch down the road.

:-)
