Default Engine Swap

Hi all,

I own an automatic 1983 928S (right hand drive) and the engine is giving lots of trouble. Since I have had the car I have been having overheating problems. Oh...btw I am in the Trinidad in the West Indies so the temperature is on average 32-35 degrees celcius. I think the head/s and/or the head gaskets may have been damaged.

Previously, I had bought a water pump because I thought that may have been the problem and after replacing the pump and starting the car, the temperature went up once again. I then opened the water bottle and the water was shooting up.

Anyhow, I am now contemplating changing the engine and I have found a 1984 4.6L engine from a manual vehicle.

Will this engine work in my 1983 car? Remember my car is automatic...

Or in the alternative, should I try and replace and/or repair the heads?

My fear is that even after replacing the heads I may have problems getting the car started when the engine is cold.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much,

Zerogen

When you changed the water pump, did you replace the thermostat and the seal behind it and the O ring in front of it?
The thermostat in these cars works in reverse to other cars. ie if you remove the thermostat you will overheat the engine. The thermostat actually expands when the engine warms up and blocks the by pass and forces water through the block.
Hope that helps.

I meant when the engine is cold it bypasses the radiator and when it warms up it seals the by pass and forces water through the radiator.

I'm just here to see what kind of answers you get. This could be relevant to my interests, particularly if an S4 engine will fit.
