Default Removing motor mounts on 1984 928.

I am pulling the engine on my 1984 928 and cannot figure out how to get to the nuts that secure the motor mount to the frame. My manual does not show that you have to drop the steering rack, but I see in another thread that he did that to replace his mounts only. In my manual they are pulling the engine with the Steering rack in place.

You can pull the engine with the rack in-place and most do this, just remove the four bolts (per side) that go through the MM's into the block, however to remove the MM's the rack must be dropped to gain access to the 19mm nuts in the cross member.

Thanks Dave!! Will I be able to move the engine forward without pulling the mounts so as to disengage the drive shaft?

The way I pulled the torque tube out of an 86 was to move the transmission back... Turned out that's the way the WSM wants you to do it. Just remove the two bolts holding the transmission to the rear cross member, it'll slide back.

You can move the engine forward some while the MMs are still attached. Not sure if there's enough movement to get the TT out.

To remove the Engine on an Auto or a Stick, you do not need to move / touch/unbolt the Trans and or TT.

Stick: remove the Clutch
Auto: unbolt the Flex plate and push it back a bit.
Both: Start lifting the engine and the jack the TT w/ upper bell attached up a bit to provide the proper angle to remove the engine.

Dave,
When you say flex plate, is that the ring gear? Sorry for the stupid questions, but this is my first attempt. I am pulling the engine with a chain fall and expect to simply push the car out from under the engine.

I can lift the engine 3 inches up off the mounts, but I stall there. I could lift the tires off the ground before the engine would move further. What have i neglected to do?

I now see that I have failed to unbolt the driving plate. Is this also called the flex plate?

I replaced the motor mounts on my 89 by simply dropping the steering rack and main cross member while the car was up on stands. Remove the tie rods from the wheel hub if you want to keep the wheels on.

The flex plate is at the flywheel.

Don't forget to unbolt the wiring harness from the crossmember on the drivers side. Many forget this. It is accesses by dropping the steering rack to get to the nut (10mm iirc)

I just did this a couple of weeks ago on an 84 (my first time too), and one of the things that I neglected to detach was that hard thin line that attaches to the front of the plenum. I detached it at the front, but it's also attached at the back of the engine by a 10 mm bolt. Oops.

What size bit do I need to get the 9 bolts out of the ring gear?
