928 Race Car - Price Valuation
#16
With such a limited market & variance in each 928 racer, its really worth what you are willing to pay for it. As has been said, at $10k you'd couldn't reproduce it for that. Which supports the comments that its better to buy one already done & customize it to your tastes than to start totally from scratch. There have been a couple of nice S4 race prepped 928s that have recently been in the $14-15K range. Gary K's car was an awesome buy, especially with all it came with. It was all I could do to try & stop even thinking about it, glad he sold it so quickly! IIRC, at one time, the Coke racer was in the $12k(?) range. And well worth much more than that with all the work Constantine put in that car. Much less any additional work by Abby. Hey, Mark A drove that one too!! Might add to that "provenance"! His expert opinion due to 928 racing experience would be greatly valued.

Thanks for the feedback fellas!
Alright, looks like I need to checking into modern safety compliance and ask for a log book.
I'm not looking into getting into racing, just need to know a low-risk "sell it all day long" price valuation.

I have the one Mark cut his teeth driving and in fact he still has about 8X as many hours in the car as I have... I'm in a selling mood, but it would be much better with the drive train out of the car Jim is talking about here.
I love those EURO S 5.0 engines! Mine (Mark's old car) comes with the installed (and tired) 4.7L Euro S engine AND an '85 32V US engine! AND a trailer!! With the auto trans I have in the car (cause I can't drive a 5spd since I can't use my legs) it weighs in at 2680# WET! NICE! Put a 5 spd in it and it will be in the 2500# range! Oh, like this one it is running and ready to drive...for DE's. Needs better padding for the cage, recertify the belts and recharge the fire bottle and you are ready to race it! Oh, change all the fluids too!
Oh, I'd take a bit over 1/3rd what I have in it... That would be around $22k...I'm in it for a bit over $60k! YOWZA!!! Seat back brace, Momo seat, AMAZING cage, REALLY COOL mod to open the cage with the door!

My car is still available and listed. I did buy it for 12k, however it needed a motor as the original motors bottom end was a complete loss after the Sebring event when Mark drove it.

eh, a minor technicality! I did know it had a blown motor, just was a little fuzzy on the specific details of your purchase. So I didn't want to say the $12k was when you bought it. Thought maybe it wasn't my call to mentioned the blown motor in the enduro race at Sebring in 2007 to further muddy the water. Maybe I should have & I certainly didn't mean to appear to imply any opinion of the Coke 928 racer's value today. To me, a car like that can only go up in value in the six yrs since then. GLWS Abby, wish I could buy it! My dad worked for Coke for about 45 yrs. So it'd truly be neat to own a 928 racer so well put together & with such a history. Wish it could come back to Florida!

Value?
Well, about what you would pay for it, mostly.
Seller will say "Ive got 30k in this"..which means it'll sell for 15k.
But determine your goal..there is no good home to race a 928 in, so it's a novelty, not a class-winning car which will again, pull a premium if you could say "This is a GTS3 winner"..etc.
IMHO, call your local NASA office, and ask for the -best- inspector they have near you, so you get a no bullcrap inspection..which done right, will take a few hours.
Ive sent home a LOT of new car owners, with cages missing what seems to be -feet- of missing weld because it was never planned out and installed right.
IMHO, that's a woefully minimal cage for a car that will be in a group with -very- fast and heavy cars.
Id consider $4k of cost to remedy that, myself.
I cant tell, but is the A pillar tied/welded to the A pillar cage? That can be class limited by rules depending what you wanna do as well.
But heck, looks like a lot of fun!!

It appears to be a track day or DE car....clearly not a race car, it doesn't even have numbers or required stickers from its race organization.
It also doesn't have logbooks..............that is HUGE....my guess is the seats-belts-fuel cell are all out of date....assuming the cage passes (hard to tell).....it could cost $2000 or more to get it up to spec to run with NASA-SCCA.....however this is no big deal for a track day-DE car....
For example, my car (51) came with a very well built cage, but needed little touch ups here and there to pass NASA tech, the seat ($500-1500) was out of date as were the belts ($350).....AND my car was built in 2008.... $2000 later it has a NASA & SCCA logbook (came with the SCCA book)
If you are serious about buying a race car......I might consider selling it...if you want turn key, this is as good as it gets..... PM or email for more details
