Hella Supertone Horns
I have a pair of Hella supertone horns to go in, I have tested these alongside the stock horns and they are much louder / more distinct. However they are loud enough to be a little obnoxious for normal use - so I'm thinking to retain the stock horns for gentle reminders (e.g. wake up lights just changed), and use the supertones solely for the folks that need a more robust response...
This means I'll need to mount both sets. Anyone mount additional horns anywhere else but in the stock location? if so how? And I do have a lot more stuff in the stock location so room is already tight there (and they are already mounted in a different configuration - without the pylon/boom).
The other fender is an option but the nose area above the air grille would probably be louder. Anyone come up with creative mounting here? there isn't so much structure there - maybe I could use the (unused on a GTS) airflap motor mounts for a simple bar mount.
The control will be a simple delay relay from the main horns - short beep beep and you get the stock wimpy "almost an apology" beep and hold on just a little longer and you get the "get out of the way beeEEEEEEP!".
Bit of a throwback to old Aston Martin's city/country horns.

It appears there is just as much room on the drivers side as the pass side to mount another set of horns. A simple bracket should do it. A few pics with fenders off for reference. T

The later (certainly S4+) horns are smaller (very short stubby horn) and mounted on a pylon (pass side only) since the fender outer support is different on those models. so the mount would be different on the drivers side - since there isn't a pylon and the ABS is there. Doable though I'm sure - though I do have plans to add some other stuff there also...
My dirvers side is a little stuffed already and going to get more stuffed soon... i alrady have the horns mounted more to the side to fit.
I do think they will be louder if they can go in the grill area - si I'd prefer but then they need to be solidly mounted and away from the radiator airflow. Difficult to see whats going on without accessing from underneath.
Here are the supertones - also compact to mount which is good, stock pylon mounts and my stuffed passenger fender.

Wife saw this post. Said her 86 horns are ghey, wants these. Maybe you need to sell a wiring kit.
What's all that other stuff inside your fender for?

The other stuff is a permanently mounted battery maintainer and an auxilliary battery. There is more going in there soon and there is also some more you can't see in front of that - pretty full.
I have never really liked the weak tone of the stock horns, there is some adjustment - but not much range on it. Like I said before it sounds like an apology - rather than a demand for attention.

not only are the Supertones loud, its an ANNOYING loud. they definitely command attention.
they are sort of directional, so they don't seem as loud in the cabin as they are if you're standing in front of the car.

Here is the controller I built for this. It has a standard weather resistant relay and fuse and a cable connector (all weatherpak types) all integrated together
Internally there is a small (simple) custom designed circuit driving the loud horns via a relay after a delay.
Inputs are (30) Power, Ground and the stock horn output - used as a trigger input (also still feeds the stock horns). The outputs are a ground and horn output pair for the supertone horns.
When you hit the horn button you get the stock horns for approx 1/3 second - then the supertones kick in and stay on, as soon as you release the horn button - all is silent.
You can repeatedly tap the horn button for <1/3 second and only get the gentle beep beep - lean on it and it gets loud fast - pretty intuitive to use.
Now to install it.

Can someone suggest horns that reproduce the original sound but not at $50 a piece? Perhaps with a bit richer sound. I've got a bunch of horns but they've all gone bad in some ways. The car sounds a bit fey and certainly won't alert people.
