Default replacing connectors

purist can go ahead and leave now....

I am wondering why people are not replacing the various connectors (14 pin, etc) with a more modern better connector like a weather pack, or deutz, amp/tyco, etc...

seems like these would make better more weather proof connections and would be easy to get.

Good question. I spent a bunch of time getting all the 'correct' fiddly pins and connectors to do an Aero mirror retrofit on Hebert's car, and couldn't get the damn mirrors to work. GB took one look at it, spat on the ground, and replaced the whole mess with Deutsch connectors. Definitely an upgrade.

that is what i am thinking.....

only issue is for some of these connectors you need a special tool to make a proper connection...not a big investment considering what car we have,

I have a brake pad warning light issue.. all new sensors, new rotors, etc.. one of the abs wires is broken off right at the connector on the right front. the right right rear has the insulation gone off one of the wires heading up to the body from the connector in the carrier...

to replace the two assemblies i will need two harnesses... over $100.00...

for about $10.00 i can redo both with better connectors.. yea i know it is not factory, but who cares...

Yardpro, can you elaborate on that? I am going to have to replace some of my 'Bosch-style' connectors soon.

I replaced the connectors on my 81 engine harness with a more modern style of the same Amp / Tyco connector already on the car. Everything form the fuel injectors to the ignition amplifier (85 EuroS brains in this car) and MAF plug etc....

Instead of a rubber boot, they have the same seals as a weatherpac connector.

The metal "pins" in these connectors do wear out and lose clamping force, that was the main reason why I decided to replace them all. I also like how the newer style connectors can be removed without fiddling with that wire clip.

I actually think the 14 pin connector is quite OK. Where I have seen issues with it its usually deterioration of the wiring feeding the connector or the cover has been broken. Its actually major overkill in capacity for most of the wires that run though it - but its pretty easy to repair as a result. Parts are still available.

Do agree that the other AMP engine connectors are fiddly due to the clips and that the rubber boots tend to perish rather too quickly... but they are also are fairly easy for an amateur to R&R if you buy the required parts... readily available.
