Hello Men. recently getting no reverse or slow to go into reverse. If I put lever into drive and then into reverse it will engage. Could this be a sign I need to replace B3 clutches or, could it just be a minor cable adjustment. Just wanting a simple fix before I decide to pull the tranny. The car is an 83 4spd with 120k on the odo. Thanks for any advice in advance.

 

Verify the fluid level.

 

If the fluid level is correct see if you can reverse up a modest incline. If it won't then it's time for B3 to be refreshed.

Thanx for the quick responses. Once reverse engages I can back up a modest incline and the fluid level is a bit higher than recommended when hot. Can the B1 brake band be adjusted? Like many folks just trying go the easy route first.

 

This is not uncommon in the 3speed box - reverse band adjustment can help - I need to do this sometime soon. Do a search on this topic.
Dont know about 4 speed.
