Default True Mileage

Today I noticed an 80 or 81 for sale on Flea Bay
and it is being sold by a dealer that claims it has only 38k on the clock so they want 10 large for it. The car looks like a 200m hard driven put away wet example. The odometer to me appears to be out of an earlier car. Maybe someone can validate that the pre 80 cars speedo's went to 170mph and later cars went to 160 like my '80. Albeit mine I'm sure could have come with an 85 Reagan speedo and was switched out at some time or another I understand that Porsche paid the fine and most had the 160's.
However my point is with all the changing of the speedo's, the number of owners that pushed the trip and grenade'd the gears have been replace with lower mileage odometers and since CarFax does not go back all that far what is real and what isn't.
One wonders, what the true mileage is on older 928's. Any thoughts?

Any German car that came from the factory in the 80s with VDO odometers with plastic gears is TMU (total mileage unknown) unless it has impeccable documentation of precisely how many times the gear(s) or cluster has been replaced and the mileage at each replacement (or freakishly credible documentation that allows one to draw a conclusion that for some reason the odometer has survived in original form.) IMO. The gears have about 10 years or 100k-miles of life.

What worf928 states is very true, but I found that most gave out around 70k,sometimes less.Oh,by the way,any original factory installed speedo for that year on a US spec vehicle would have only gone to 85MPH

Reagan speedo? I don't think I've ever seen a photo of him in a speedo.

The Reagan administration is the one that allowed those silly 85 mph speedometers to go away. The 85 speedometer was a Carter Administration thing - mandated in 1979, before Reagan won the election in 1980. Eliminating it was proposed in 1981, along with tons of other silly and useless laws.

So these should be called Carter Speedometers, if anything.

BTW my '79 doesn't have an 85 mph speedometer, but it's not here right now and I can't recall if it was 160 or 170. I think 160.

So it was Carter! I was mislead.
The rumor mill has it that there was a fine for not putting 85mph speedo's in cars and at first Porsche complied then decided to pay the fine. They don't make 85mph cars.
Some of the 78/79 cars that I have seen all had 170mph but it would be worth a beer to figure out when they changed to 160. The pod and the speedo in my car have been out so many times before me that I think the PO was a "working girl"

My 81 had a 85 MPH speedo but I changed it to a 160.
