Default Working through my charging system

Hi I have a 1984 928. I've been going through my charging system. So five replaced the alternator and the battery and checked all my connections to make sure there's no corrosion. At times and idol my voltmeter still reads down well below 12 V. Of course I live in Arizona so this would be with the headlights on the air conditioning on and the fans up by the engine. Is this normal? Or am I missing something?

The dash voltmeter is not the most accurate indication od system voltage. I depend on it as a relative indication of charging system health. Buy a cheap ($4.99 at Harbor Freight, much more for a Fluke at Fry's) DVM abd check at the jump post under the hood, and also at the battery. At the battery end, look at positive to negative post, and at positive post to chassis ground. If there's a difference at the battery, replace the ground strap.

Wally Plumley has an excellent annual maintenence procedure at the Specialists website that includes cleaning connections and grounds. Try this before you panic and start throwing money and parts at the symptom.
