Default Fan working??

Folks, I've had my 928 for over a year now and have never seen the front fan running. Should it be? The fan closest to the motor runs when the engine is on but not the one closest to the number. Thoughts?
Thanks

IIRC,the one closest to the engine is belt driven and should run. The one up front should work for your a/c or when your radiator hits a certain temperature.

On my car, if the hood is open the electric fans will not run. This is a safety feature. I'm not sure if your model year has the same setup. If it does, try pressing the hood open switch to simulate a closed hood while the engine is running and the a/c is on.

Here's some discussion that includes diagrams that match how your 86 car fan works.

Basically, 4 things will trigger it.

To test it, locate the intake temp sensor located near the oil fill cap, the sensor that sticks axially into the intake tube. Remove the two sensor wires (one is hot) and touch them together. Fan will run. To run, fan must be good (usually true) and fuse needs to be good. It actually will run at reduced speed in this mode of triggering, because power is drained off in this special circuit by a resistor on the passenger fender.

Other three triggers: trans oil temp, freon temp and cooling water temp -- they rely on fuse and one of the relays being functional. Diagram will lead you to those parts.
