A wise man once said "You have to WANT to drive a 928." Do you really want to drive a 928? If so, then the fixing and expenses are secondary. If you don't WANT to drive a 928 then sell and move on to the next fun experience of your choosing.
Just my 2 pence.

If your 928 is a transportation then you need to get rid of cause the maintenance and a gas guzzler.
If your 928 is a toy, a pet or your mistress then you want to care for her, make sure nothing wrong with her.
People spent thousands to their dogs and cats, why wouldn't you on your 928 unless it is JUST a transportation.
Working/fixing on a 928 is a hobby and should be fun and if one feels the opposite, the love is over!

So, not that you don't have a point, however I think my car is worth a lot more than what it costs.
I mean to say, I think that almost all of these cars are extremely undervalued. I think we drive world class cars, and I don't give a damn if the marketplace knows it or not.

I am in the middle of a fairly complete restro. Almost all mechanical issues are done, new paint fairly recently and new turbo twists and skins. All the interior but dash came out, new carpets, re-dyed most of the leather, new shifter, fixed all light issues, new stereo, speakers, amp etc, etc. We didn't spend a ton of money but more than we had budgeted, big surprise! But the funny thing is that while I was doing the work with my 16 year old son, I thought I would be glad when the interior was done. Now that I'm one day away from finishing, I'm kind of feeling bad the work is over. I know that might sound weird, but I'm looking forward to the next thing, cleaning up the engine, new wires, check all fuel and vacuum lines and polishing, powder coating and painting the engine/bay area. So the answer to your question is, when you are dreading the next thing instead of looking forward to putting your own personal touch on a car that is way more than personal transportation, it is time to move on.

I really don't know where to stop. The car runs perfectly and I still put it on the lift bars and look and look and look.
Then the smallest thing goes wrong and I wonder why I do it. But you back up a bit, look at the shape and fall in love again. Like my wife.

How many cars do I see on the side of the road flashing a white hanky that were built in the last 10 years? Stuff breaks on all cars. My 86.5 is a DD with 190K on it, 57K of which are mine. It has never left me stranded, including on a number of >1K trips. I said, btw, if I still liked it after 50K I would fix it up, which I have started doing. Might start my own thread on that.
