After cranking, have you removed a plug to see if it's wet in the cylinder or any smell of fuel?

After cleaning the grounds on the cam tower the light seems to be a bit stronger but in the process I broke the timing belt cover at the point where the grounding bolt screws into it so the ground is still suspect. I called it a night at that point and will try to hit it again tonight.

cleaning the grounds helps but still not starting on it's own. So I have spark (runs when force fed) and has signal to the injectors but I am still going to clean up grounds AND replace the fuel filter. The fuel pressure seems good but this last attempt I saw something that I didn't notice before. After cranking the pump continues for a couple of seconds, then after it stops the pressure continues to climb for another 2 or 3 seconds which says to me that the filter is restricting flow. So every item that I scratch off is replaced with another one. Aah the joy of working on cars.

Brian don't get frustrated and try an enjoy the process as much as you can. Listen to Landseer, he's been around the block or two with 928s.
I have found it very productive to take a lot of breaks to think and enjoy the other things to be enjoyed in life while doing a restoration.
When you get back to working on the '81 you'll make progress and not get frustrated.
A lot of people go ***** to the walls and later throw in the towel.
Good luck, -Matt

nope, the car won't win! HOWEVER the local parts counter sold me the wrong filter. Appears to be the right box, but wrong filter. I checked the old filter and it seems to be flowing well so while I wait for a replacement-replacement filter I will start tracing fuel lines. This will have to wait till tomorrow but as long as I knock one item off the list a day I will be ok.

ok, fuel pressure issue resolved, was a bad gauge and I really do have ~40 psi. The noid light flashes showing signal to the injectors and the green wire has been replaced. Next I am going to start pulling injectors to see if they are getting fuel and if they are gummed up to the point of not firing. Car still starts on ether but never fires on it's own. So known good spark, injector signal, fuel pressure, and air. Will also pull the plugs per NoVector, I am sure they could stand to be replaced anyway but since it runs on ether I don't think that they are the real problem.

IT'S ALIVE!!!
I pulled the injectors and decided that I would do a quick home-cleaning on them and it now runs on at least a few cylinders. I shut it back down pretty quickly because the oil gauge jumped to 5 and the oil light was flashing so I figure I need to sort that little detail out before I turn the engine into a lump of pretty junk. Once I figure out the oil pressure I will tackle the missing cylinders, starting with plugs, then move on to one of the more thorough home injector cleaners to see if I can get the engine back to all 8.

More progress. I bled the clutch last night because it was going straight to the floor, but even after bleeding it there was no change. Then I decided to check the adjuster which was all the way loose. Once I sorted that out the clutch feels normal.
After the clutch I cranked the engine to check a few things and stumbled on the next issue, there is a hard fuel line that has been replaced with a soft line that has since split. I never even checked it since it wasn't supposed to be there. it is a minor issue so I should have it fixed quickly. I think that I caused the split when I removed the right side fuel rail.
More updates to come.

Fuel leaks fixed and the car has driven under it's own power for the first time in several years. Great feeling but there is still plenty to do.
The down side is I have come to the realization that I really didn't need a second 928, I just needed the transmission. Now the question is do I sell it as is, or keep going. The car needs plenty, the dash is toast, the fuel gauge doesn't work, the front seats need recovered and it needs a respray plus little odds and ends.
