16V engine- turn backwards, bad?
how bad is this, if the engine is turned backwards? counterclockwise, by hand. or not so much of a problem with the 16v?
btw, not my car or my engine... this is just a general question.

I don't believe turning it backwards is an issue, they seem to be quite a stout and durable thing the 16 valve engine. I've subjected mine to some terrible abuse but it just keeps shrugging it off.

Turning an engine backward doesn't by itself cause any damage. The fear is that it puts the timing belt tensioned under much higher load as it would effectively be on the tensioned run of the belt where it is designed to be on the un-tensioned run. This increases the chance of having the belt skip. If the timing belt doesn't skip and the tensioner mechanism isn't overloaded and bent there is no issue.

Turning the engine backwards by hand is not a big deal if:
1) the belt is at proper tension
2) you turn the engine in the correct direction two full revolutions before you run the starter so as to get the proper distribution of tension on all parts of the belt.
If both of the above are not true then the belt may skip teeth.
