Well I ended up just pulling the alternator, and the current drain dropped to 40 ma from 300ma. I left everything else connected except the interior lights fuse for this measurement before and after. I think that means I have a short or drain to ground in the alternator. BTW I have noticed my dashboard indicated voltage down about 1.5 volts for the past month or so also. I will send the alternator in for repair tomorrow.
Thanks for all the help.

Hi,
It's been 2 weeks since I sent my alternator off for parts cost warranty service. They have treated me pretty well in the past but are now dragging this on a little. I must admit I have been spoiled by Roger's service excellence. I decided to go back to a stock alternator, with shroud and cooling duct. I will keep Carl's high performance alternator as a spare, if it ever gets done. I somehow feel better by returning to the protection of the ducted cooling system, sealed from the elements to a much greater degree than the open case design I have been using. FWIW this is the second rebuild of this alternator in 5 years. It's not that expensive, but it is very inconvenient.
I hope to be back on the road by next weekend.

Hope you are too, good driving weather here right now that i am missing too. It's funny with Porsches, two weeks go by and you just have to get in and drive them.

It was pretty expensive when new right? and has needed 2 repairs in 5 years... For something supposed to be heavy duty - not really that good...

My stock Bosch alternator lasted 19 years - so far...

My thoughts, exactly, Alan. Lesson learned.
