I got stopped the other day (warning only) and the officer was amazed that my 928 was almost 35 years old. He asked me how many were still on the road....I told him that I knew that thee were appx 61,000 made world-wide from 1978-1995 but had no idea how many were still around. I am pretty sure he just stopped me to look at my car....he was a good guy so I took it as a compliment.
Any idea or educated guesses?

Would it be safe to assume maybe 1/2 are still on the road? Is there some way Google could mine data and find this?

Supposedly 2/3 of all Porsches ever made are still around. I don't know if this is true. Given the extraordinary expense involved in maintaining and repairing 928s (including when they are in accidents), and the fact that they haven't been made in almost 20 years (with most being made nearly 30 years ago)...I would guess 1/2 still around is way too high.

Good question. I drive truck, and go all over the eastern half of the US (mostly east of the Mississipi, rarely west of I-35).
I see 928s very rarely on the road. Maybe once a month or every other month. I see more Ferraris than sharks. Saw 2 this week, though. A shiny red late body (S4 or GT/GTS) on 287 just east of the Tappan Zee bridge near NYC on Monday afternoon, and a dull red early body heading in towards Chicago on the Edens on Thursday afternoon.
There are none that I see around my town. I haven't seen one locally in a number of years. Although I had a dude come up to me in a Walgreens parking lot last month and tell me he had "A red S4." When I asked where, he said "Right here in town." When I said that I hadn't ever seen it, he said "I haven't driven it in about 10 years." When I asked why not, he kind of stumbled a bit and then said "I have lots of cars to drive." I thought about being a bit of a jerk and asking if he snapped the belt or had thrust bearing failure, but I ended up just saying "Oh, ok" and walking away.

I think they are more common here in DFW than in most places....but since I have been paying close attention I have still only seen a couple on the road, outside of group events. For some reason...the 30-35% range would seem to be a fair guess I would think.

I would say maybe 40% are capable of being road worthy. That means they are more than a parts car but not road worthy. As far as a maintaned car ready for a long cruise I would guess 10%.

That would've been me in New York.
In 5 years I have only seen two on the road. I wouldn't say it's a shame. I think it makes us kind of elite, and deservedly so.

I think it is a shame to realize how few of these amazing cars are still up and running. The real shame is all the ones that are rotting away because they have more problems than the owners know how to fix, can afford to fix or are willing to fix.
The "elite" thing is nice, but I'd be willing to give up some of that in exchange for more of us out on the roads.

I probably live within 2 miles of you... If you ever see a white S4 wandering around, flag me down.

In the years of its production 61,000 were made. How many others were produced in this time frame, and include the 924, 944, 911 and its turbo brother ? Quite a bit more I'm sure. With these cousins, their 'running numbers' have probably fallen off in the same proportion. We just had a much smaller population to begin with. It's just the nature of the numbers.
With the 928, it was always an elite thing.

There were about 4500 sold in England. IIRC last year there were about 1000 taxed and on the road with about another 1000 off the road as they were not taxed.
So 25% on the road, 25% off the road. the other 50% scrapped.

By the nature of numbers, I could envision similar numbers in USA.
