Hi all, just started my 1st ever TBWP servcie on my 1987 S-4. Got to pg. 45 of Dwaynes service write up and found this 3/4 in pool of oil. The whole area is damp with oil and very dirty. Never noticed it prior to starting this TBWP service. I have driven the car approx 100 miles since purchase.
Intake refresh, injectors rebuilt by PO prior to me purchasing car. I painted the top gold and did the letters while top was off. Oil was not there when the PO a put it back together.
Any ideas. pics attached
UPDATE: ordered all gaskets to do refresh from Roger, add another project to the list.

Most likely the oil filler neck seal or its cracked.

Could also be the breather lines. I had the same pool before my intake refresh. Quite common I beleive.
One of my breathers was so far gone it completly disintegrated when lightly touched. Looked like it had had a hole in it for some time breathing stuff all over the front of the engine.

Everett,
VERY common, nothing to worry about. I think all of my cars have had this before refreshing the top end. The problem is, I don't think you can fix the oil filler neck gasket without taking the intake off. Maybe you can on an S4, but when I did the TB/WP on my S3(86.5) a few months ago, I saw the same pool and also some coolant leaks from the water bridge and this lead to a top end refresh at the same time as the TB/WP. There might be more room to get the bridge and filler neck off on an S4. I'm facing the same situation on my new 5 speed, with coolant leakage being the main problem, and plan to do a top end refresh this fall.
BTW, I couldn't open the pics you sent me.

hey guys,
I have an 87 and I had the same problem. The breather hose fell apart and oil began to leak. I was able to replace the hose by removing the water bridge. It's tight, but there's room to wiggle it out. Once the bridge is out, you can get to a lot of different things like the oil filler neck, knock sensors, etc.
John Pritle has a write up on the procedure: http://members.rennlist.com/pirtle/svc_coolant.html

Roger

Thanks all, at work right now, just logged on. There sure are a lot of "common" problems with our 928 addiction. Thanks for all your help. I will remove the H20 bridge and proceed from there. Looks like I will be doing quite a bits of cleaning before I proceed with the WP/TB change.
I am also going to replace the fuel and pwr steer lines at the same time. Note* Trans lines, auto shift cable, M/M's and shocks have just been completed. (cheated and had A/S auto here in Humble, Tx do those)
Thanks
Lon
